MANSFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 17 November 1868

MANSFIELD.     (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). The late ruins have had a most benefi cial effect in reviving the parched and withered-looking grass. With a, few ex ceptions the farmers have reason to hope that a fair average harvest will be gathered, in this district. The Coroner, Dr. Rowe, proceeded to Jamieson on Saturday, for the purpose of opening the adjourned inquest on the body of the infant found concealed in a closet. An accident of a serious nature happened to a minor named Trueman, residing at Maindample. It appears, that while riding through the bush, his leg came in contact with a tree. Fortunately he was only a few yards from his home when the accident occurred. Dr. Reynolds was immediately sent for and found that the poor fellow's. leg was broken in two places. Several valuable dogs have been poisoned. both at Mansfield and Muiindample. Dogs, that are constantly. chained up should- cer-. tainly be exempt from this wholesale slaughter. An instan...

AT LAST. Eureka I ] have found her. Oh happy, happy, d?y !I With four strong posts Iv'e bound lher, That she won't run away. Legone, sour poverty and grief I've been and "registered" my reeff I've found her,, yes, I've found hier Her that I've sought so long; With wulcorme 1 have crown'd.Lher The sutbject of my song. With anxious heart, no more I'll sigh:. lHer happy, happy, lover I. I view with pride "the beauty," l:edeck'd in virgin gold ; Oh I what a ileasing duty, Her treosures to unfold With shovel and with pick to test Her worth, and bare her glittering breast:. Ah I what dell?ilt is stealing Into my beating heart ; Ab I what a joyous fclilng Does this bright gold impart. how dooer to me the precious prize, That's thus reveal'd before my eyes.. How long has she been waiting To show herself to me ? Beon bringing or creating, Thle riches that 1 see ? lay, many, many ages past, And I have found her now at last. Stu,--From the interest that you have always evincel in the ceuseof education I fiel a pculiar I eropriety in alddresing myself to you upon thli in- I portant subject. A large proporti:ol of the chilldren if this colony attlnd the Common Schools which re under the control of the Itord of Edhcation. dy object in this conmmunication is to show you that tie expectations of the parents are not, nor are they likely to be realised as regards the;itmprove ment which they are led to believe will be ac complished by the form and outward show always accompanying anything undertaken by Government. I assert, Sir, that the majority of the children who do now attend those schools do not understand atithe of what is attempted to be imparted to them. The C emptation of the mere nominal sumthat ca?hl child is charged is to the parents ofa thoughtless and parsi- t monious turn of mind too much for them to resist, and therefore they s...

CHIEF COURT OF MINES. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 20 November 1868

CHIEF COUItL' OF MINES. -4--- O'Sullivan and others v. Clarke and others. Mr W. V. Smith for the plaintiffs, Mr Bunny and M1lr MI'Farland, for the defen-. dants. This was a case stated by the Warden at Alexandra, in the Beechworth, district. On the 5th day of Nov., 1868, ant Alex andra, Denis O'Sullivan and others proceeded, against Thommas Clarke rad ot hers, to obtain a declaration of forfeiture, and to be put in posses ion of certain ground at Alexandra. From tlhe evidence, it appeared that Clarke marked out andt registered on the 28th April, 1868, an or linary quartz claim. Certain other claims ( Nos, 2; 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 ) adjoining No. 8 having been abandoned ( so thr as Clarke was aware ), he, on tile 18th May, and again on the 26th May, registered altogether ( includling claum No. 8, re.istered as already mentioned on the. 2dth April) as a quartz tunnelling claim, under the name of tih " Galatea," issuing the same miners' right all through. There is no such claim known to th...

(2otlhe Editor oe'the A:iLandra Times.) Srn,-Is it not to be deplored that injune itions should be taken out in these dull times against claims that would otherwise be legitimately worked if it were not for the interference of those jnumpin-r, loafing, lazy loutlers who I can only compare to ia fester ing sore on this and every other minin'g counmunity? If the powels Ilint htre cannot, or will not, de:l with this growing evil, I would suggest that the digg?ers take the matt.er in their own hands, and cause these drones to be flogged 1and branded, so that they daie not mix with honest and indus treus men. This is the greatest grievance that the mining interest is sulllring from; hence alises a great portion of the dulness of Alexandra. You, Mr Editor, I feel sure, will use your powerfid pen in this matter, and not only strive to fleoe us from this low set, but anlo fionm the ewb:mrrassment caused by the insecurity of all titles con nected with mines. ON A PORTRAIT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 20 November 1868

ON A POitTRAIT. Here is a semblance of the outward man, The eye of friends may recognise the tache V ho can from this the inward feelings scan, Or any of the hidden passions trace That work, und rule within the mortal case ? '"lhe placid look, by this for ever worn. Tells not the depth of thought or wild ambltiouo, wish; The breast, mayhlap, by secrebanguish?torn The lone, unloved, uncared for thoughts that rush Through the sad heart, with desolkting crush. Still these may be, but hid by seeming brightness, We look on what ' unlike, and yet a likeness i iOh, that a mellow ray from realms of light, Would shine upon our mrinds-dark as the night ;. MAlt from our eyes the vain, complacent seal, " And here our actions as our fitce reveal Not hidden by the maskof, telf-sutillcieny, But as the pure, unsullied mind doth see.
