Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY "EXCELSIOR." SATURDAY, 2ND MARCH. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 2 March 1878

SJqhtn hdtn & j1a ,ahuu av I'nllr, lIlllE EVEIRY SATUIIDAY " EXCELSIORI." SATURDAY, 2ND MARCH. IP we leave awhile consideration of the complications, intricacies, consequences and subsidiary issues of the existing deadlock, and go back to first causes, we shill find that despite the sophis. tries and blunder of the Ministerial party, payment of members is at the bottom of the present crisis, and yet there really is no reason why they should be ashamed of acknowledging the actual bone of contention and en deavoring to fight out the battle on a false basis unless they are conscious of the unworthiness of the cause of the dispute. No doubt, so far as the que-tiost consists of whether the pre sent Parliament shall continue to roe ceive payment, or whether the whole question shall be remitted to the coun try to decide at the next election, is a very paltty matter to wrangle over, althouklh it may be of relatively im mense importance to the majority of lO corormmont upportoer in t...

CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 2 March 1878

CRIC K E T. .     The return cricket match between the, Alexandra and the Alexandra Standard clubs was played last Saturday, the juniors having the handicap of 18 to 11 of their opponents, besides which Messrs Wollaston and Hewitt were prohibited from bowling. The eighteen went first to the wickets, and commenced play in anything but an encouraging manner, having eight wickets down for 10 runs, the other ten players, however, made a better stand, and succeeded in bringing the score up to 56 before they were dispersed, M. Waters with 14 and Milroy with 9 being the highest scorers. The Alexandra team then went to the wickets, but only allowed that their bat ting powers were very weak, for the whole eleven succumbed to the bowling of E. Cameron and F. Moon, which was really good, for the small score of 59, thus beating the eighteen only by 3 runs. No doubt the small score is attributable in a slight degree to the number in the field and the determined manner i...

A WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 9 March 1878

A WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH. A most melancholy occurrence, resulting in the death of a young woman in a frightfully painful manner, took place at an early hour on Tuesday morning. At about 2 o'clock a female lodger, sleeping on the promises of the Beehive hotel, Blackwood street, Hotham, which was kept by Miss Mary Doherty, was alarmed by hearing the noise of fire, and upon getting up discovered the place to be in flames. Without loees of time she proceeded to a room in the back of the bar, in which Miss Doherty was sleeping, for the purpose of giving her the alarm, but was unable to get near the place, on account of the heat and smoke. Several neighbours, however, broke into the premises, and commenced to put out the firo with water, an effort which shortly alter the arrival of the Hotham Fire Brigade proved successful. As soon as possible an entrance was affected into the room occupied by Miss Doherty, when, to everyone's horror that unfortunate lady was found in a crouching position u...

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. FARM WORK FOR MARCH. ABRAHAM LINCOLNE'S MONTHLY REPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 9 March 1878

AGRICULTURAL NOTES. FARM WORK FOR MARCI. AnnIRAula LIrNCOLNR's MONTIILY RrPORT. Grasses.:-The late glorious rains could not have fallen at a more favorable time. The continued dry weather since harviest had pre vented weed-seeds from ;germinatiating, and all paddecks appiearel clean and woeedless prior to the ralin; tllt the surface of the country has Iltered niow, and weeds are the rule in. stead of the exception. Our summers usually break up in March ; this season is an excep. tional one, and the early springing of the weeds will enable tile farmer to tackle and kill them before he sows his grass seeds; It is absolutely necessary to kill ,il weeds before sowing for the grasses. It is no use sowing clean seeds upon foltl land, and it is a loss of seed, time, and money to sow fool seeds upon any ground ; yet it'ls often done, and blame is too frequently given to the seed agent, when it ought to be awarded to the owner. It seldom costs over half-aecrown an acre more for good, pure, g...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 9 March 1878

MELBOURNE LETTER. (FtROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). Our " old man of the son," otherwise the deadlock, still remains masterol thoe slrution, and defies all efforts to shake him off. Several attempts have been made recently to restore matters to their normal condition, but without avail, and now both sides appear to be committed to an indefinite prolonga tion of the struggle. The telegram from the Home Secretary, which was to have either made or marred the for tunes of the Government, his done nesther one nor tihe other, being as de lightfully ambiguous as State docu ments usually are, so that both sides claim it as a deliverance in their favor. The Governor is to take his stand upon law, and if in doubt to have recourse to the legal advice at his command. The Ago interpreted this to mean that he might go outside the Cabinet for the commodity, but the Chief Secore tary says it refers merely to that of his Attorney-General. Mr Berry, how ever, thinks it 'desirable to wait before acting u...
