Explosion at Power [?]. [Newspaper Article] — Nathalia Herald and Picola, Narioka, Kotupna and Moira Advertiser — 21 April 1914

Explosion at Power ^1ou e. About io- o'clock on Thursday morning a tremendous explosion occurred at the Rochester electric power house just as preparations were being made to start the engine. Mr. W. T. Parkes, the manager, was standing near the back dcor, when suddenly the ga-; box—a large iron cylindor, weighing about half a ton, and measuring about 5ft. in diameter — blew up with a tremendous report. Fortunately, the box itself was not smashed to pi.ces, otherwise Mr. Parkes and two engineers, who were within a few yards fixing the new generator, must have been killed. When the excitement had subsided it was found that the heavy top of the gis box, which was secured in place by 30 half-inch bolts, had blown off. Every bolt was broken sh^rt off near the nut, so great was force of the explosion. On top of the lid there was a heavy pulley and chain, and also a section of heavy piping. These were blown into the air. Mr. Parkes was struck on the leg and back with pieces of flying meta...

Forestry and its Relation to Agriculture. [Journal of Agriculture.] [Newspaper Article] — Nathalia Herald and Picola, Narioka, Kotupna and Moira Advertiser — 21 April 1914

Forestry and its Relation to Agriculture. By H. Mackay, Conseivntor of Forests. [Journal of Agriculture.] Forestry means the preservation and maintenance of the natural tree growth of a country by wise use. It concerns^ it=elf, indeed, with the re stocking or replenishment of naked an.d denuded areas, of land reckless ly'stripped by the hand of tnan or by the devastation "f fire, hence it includes the sowing and planting of trees to repair the lavages com mitted by these agencies. Agricul ture, on the other hand, is the utilization and cultivation of the soil in order that it may yield the great est diversity of products for the service of man and beast. The two sciences are closely related to each Other, and forests properly controlled and wisely used always have a bene ficial influence on agriculture. It is when man goes against na'ural I nvs, and strips the cover of mountain and hill, that he and his fellows suffer most loss in the long run. If you denude the mountain and hill-to...
