oMdleWork [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 July 1906

oMdleWork Enjcflrb . ( Aarqaret Blair { THE PATCH AND THE HOLE . We have always been taught to view the patch . in > favorable contrast to the hole . This is paying it but a poor compliment . The patch deserves something better than that , for , as a device for tlie exhibition of neat sewing , it is not to be surpassed . Almost anything can be slighted with less danger of detection than the patch . It challenges the sewer s cleverness in its style and adjustment , her deftness in perfectly matching the figure or weave , her skill in fine needle work . The most humble of her mending devices , the patch , is still her strongest assistant . It restores the garments that are past all other aid and sometimes these are made good by its means for a long life of usefulness , when otherwise they must have been cut off in their prime . The patch does indeed perform a similar service for the ailing garment that the surgeon performs for the ailing body , its cure being quick and thor...

^ umions ^ FADS AND FRILLS FOR WARM WEATHER . By July the summer fashions have become quite as settled as they are apt to be during the season and those wardrobes which are iust preparing have the advantage of being exactly what is desired rather than an uncertain forecast . The woman who enjovs the cool breezes of her own verandah rather than the uncertain comforts of some other may utilize many a summer morning in fashioning pretty blouses of thin material and dainty little coats of lace or lingerie fabrics . It is the detail which makes up the fashionable wardrobe and any woman who is clever with her fingers may make these small garments or accessories without a great deal of expense and satisfy her desire for becomingness and style . Summer gowns are real summer gowns this year and Mistress Fashion seems to be more in harmony with comfort than for some years past . Waists may be elaborately inset with lace or embroidered , but they are simply made and with lacey collars or low ,...

PJeaM . % ( Mes SUGGESTIONS . Avoid the habitual use of stimulants—of any } rind . The boy who begins the use of tobacco or liquor early is physically mined . Common table salt makes a good dentifrice . A teaspoonful dissolved in two thirds of a tumbler of water , used in brushing the teeth , hardens the gums , and whitens the teeth . Masticate well . Five minutes more at dinner may give you better use of an hour afterwards . At meals never drink a full glass of very hot or very cold liquid , at one time . Use good palatable food , not highly seasoned ; vary in quantity and character according to age , climate , weather and occupation . Eating at regular intervals is more important for good digestion , than the number of times each day , or the quantity , as these must be governed by the circumstances . As a rule the flesh of meat eating animals is not wholesome food . Sponge off neck throat and chest in cold water every morning , dry quickly with a soft towel , and rub until in a g...

w ^ SSkJ ^ BY EDITH TiW RAYMOND . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 July 1906

w ^ SSkJ ^ BY EDITH TiW RAYMOND . We have some very good letters from our Young Folks , telling of so many different ways in which to earn money in the country , and on a farm that I am sure our city cousins will wish they had the same opportunities . The stories are all so well told , that it is difficult to decide which is the best . It would be a pleasure to give each one of you a prize , put since we cannot do that , we been have obliged to take into account the appearance of the manuscript , as well as the story itself , in making a decision , Those of you who did not get a prize must remember that there are other contests coming , and try again . All the boys and girls who read these stories , would better enter the next contest , for it will give you practice and prepare you for the more difficult ones , that we may give you bye and bye . We will only have room for a few of the letters , but hope to print others , from time to time . If Arthur Sorum had read . over the rules ...

% ijj $ m SUMMER CARE OF LAYING HENS . Nowadays we find very few fowls which have not comfortable houses to protect them against the weather and yards of greater orless area in which they are confined , especially during the breeding season , In most cases these yards are so small that they are either bare of grass or the vegetation that grows is unfit for use as food , yet with proper care the fowls do well in these enclosures during the spring and the early part of summer . After the first of July , however , they should be removed from the regular winter quarters and placed in orchards or on other grass lands where there is plenty of shade to protect them from the hot sun and where there is fresh grass to eat and plenty of range , on which to exercise . The old yards should be plowed and seeded if the sod is destroyed or thoroughly raked and allowed to freshen up jf the sod is still productive . The house should be thoroughly cleaned and fumigated . If these thing ; are done the ...
