SOME HOG LORE . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 16 January 1902
SOME HOG LORE . By Trofessor Henry . SPECIAL SEBVICE or THE LIVE STOCK Wor . Ln MADISON * , WIS ., Jan ., 14 . —That there is something in feed Prof . Henry , dean of the Wisconsin Agricultural College , has demonstrated to the satisfaction of the realm of silence in which he is an acknowledged anthority . Not only has he demonstrated the superiority of certain kinds ot feed in hog growing but hs has asserted beyond possibility of contradiction that the young pig may be stunted or given a maisive , substantial frame on which a large quantity of fat may bs inexpensively placed during the tlttins stage aeaording as his ration is prepared . He has demonstrated the value of buna making feed , sueh as bone meal and a . hss and also the disadvantages of raising pigs on purely carbonaceous diet of which tbe chief is corn . ••••- Develop the body of the growing pig ; put on fat afterwards , is Prof . Henry s advice . To prove the vaiua of this theory he put it into practice by taking two lo...
The Tree of Life . [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 16 January 1902
The Tree of Life . Plant patience in the garden of thy soul ! The roots are bitter but the fruits are sweet ; And when , at last , it stands a tree complete , Beneath its tender shade the burning heat And burden of the day shall lose controlPlant patience in the garden of thy soul ! —Henry Austin in Harper s Weekly . Colorado sheep men have figured it down until 1-21 , 000 is considered a long estimate on the number of fed sheep and lambs to come out of Arkansas valley for this year . This is a decrease of more than half , and ought to encourage men who have sheep and lambs on feed in other sections of the country . Feeding operations are known to bo on a much smaller scale in other sections than in former years , and it all leads to a conclusion that good fat lamb chops are going to be a luxury in the near future .

BE ERNEST IF YOU ttUSH TO SUCCEED [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 16 January 1902
BE ERNEST IF YOU ttUSH TO SUCCEED BY SIGNOR mARCONI , Inventor of LUirelesa Telegraphy One cannot speak about success or failure without referring constantly to oneself . Therefore pardon me for referring to myself in this article . Great earnestness , great intensity of purpose , a great desire to achieve your end —that , I think , is the first requisite of success . EXPRESSED IN TWO WORDS , HARD WORK IS THE FIRST REQUISITE , for earnestness and intensity of purpose mean hard work . But this kind of hard work is play . It is play because of your intense interest in it . I do not mean that you should permit your zeal and ambition to succeed to make you work too hard—to the detriment of your gnor arcom . health . That is folly . For good health is a tremendous capital . But hard work well directed in a profession that you like will bring success . If I have been in any way successful in my chosen field it is because I am bound up in problems relating to electrical development . My mi...

Selecting a Herd Bull [Newspaper Article] — Chicago Livestock World — 16 January 1902
Selecting a Herd Bull F . H . Gilchrist , Hope , Indiana , Before Indiana Shorthorn Breeders . When I go to select a herd bull , I first make an inspection of my herd of cows . But before we go further let as hang this motto on the wall : Tlie sire is the thing . Then I hunt for a bull that will nick with my cows as a whole . ea nearly as I can . One that has proven himself to be a show bull or a descendant from a show bull . While it is true some of our best breeding bulls are not show bulls , generally sneaking wc all look for a bull of show yard record . Then I want an ideal breeding bull . In my description of a bull I wish to mention some of the most noted ones , such as Gay Monarch , St . Valeutine , Royal Hero , Nonpareil , Victor , Baron Cmiekshank 3 rd and Choice Goods . These bulls posess the characteristics of a breeding bull : First he must have a masculine head and neck with a broad muszle , ? Aide between tho eyes and a strong jaw . Those are signs of a good feeder ; a...
