AMONG HORSEMEN [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 13 February 1896

AMONG HORSEMEN CONDITION OF RANGE HORSES . THE latest reports from the Medicine Creek and White River ranges in South Dakota , received February 9 , indicate that horses that have roamed on the range all winter , perhaps , without the eye ofthe owners on them for months are in excellent condition . In fact , Could not look better . Though there may be . a cold snap or two aiid a storm or so it is not likely that there will be severe losses from exposure now that the winter is so far-gone , A The cattle on these ranges are now in better condition than at any time during the past year ; in fact are in better marketable condition than they were last fall . Young stock placed on the range last fall , many very late , are taking on fat every day , and many Of them are looking as well as cattle raised on the range and accustomed to rustling for themselves . Not a forkful of hay has been fed this winter . P .-J , BERRY & GOS MID-WINTER ¦ A --- ;;¦;; ; : > , ¦ / .. ; ...

Farm , Garden and Orchard - 4 [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 13 February 1896

Farm , Garden and Orchard - 4 SOME COMPARISONS OF PRICES . IN debating whether to feed more corn 1 and less hay , or vice versa , it is well to bear in mind that corn at 30 cents per cwt . is equivalent to hay at $ 6 per ton , and corn at 40 cents per cwt is the same as hay at $ 8 per ton . In Kansas and Nebraska , however , the farmer is compelled to compare his corn on the 1 cob with coal . At 14 cents per bushel , the price at which P . D . Armour has been buying , for storage in . cribs along the railways , corn would be equivalent to coal at about $ 4 per ton . ; CASSAyA CULTURE . TO the Editor : I have been requested tc write for publication some facts pertaining to the planting and cultivation of cassava ; and also to give my experience with respect to its value as food for domestic animals . As the selecting of suitable ground is the first consideration , permit me to say that the highest and most porous soil , well supplied with barnyard , or nitrogenous , manures is almost...

THE FARMERS' SIDE [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 13 February 1896

THE FARMERS SIDE PIE BAKERY ECONOMICS . WE have before called . , attention to paucity . of braintissue as exhibited by the editorial writers of the Chicago Times-Herald when dealing with , economic questions . Instead of making the ra ^ sh statements to which it is addicted , it-would be wise to follow the example of the Tribune and others of the ardent worshipers of the golden calf who call the advocates of bimetallism all the hard names they can think of . When facts , are scarce and logic weak and the strong reasons all on the other side , as is the case with the goldites , there is no argument so effective as to lustily shout crank , lunatic , long-eared prairie shriekers , etc . It is very convincing to weak intellects . In commenting on the recent large oversubscription to the bond sale the TimesHerald says editorially : This is conclusive proof of the utter impotency of the free coinage fad in the United States , all assertions to the contrary notwithstand ing . We must conf...

Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 13 February 1896

Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees HEN VS . BROODER . FOR winter-hatched chickens ,: we prefer the brooder to the hen . Some hens will hover their chickens when they require it in cold weather and some will not . In fact about fifty per cent , of them let their chickens stand about and cry from cold , while they are eating . Such chillIngs causes the chicks to take the dysentery and die . If the hen is in a , protected spot , and in a snug and dry coop , it does not make so much difference ; but if there are several hens with chickens ,. it is of ten Inconvenient , if not impossible , to give each hen and brood a first class place . With , a brooder it is quite different . It can be set most anywhere , and not expose the chickens to extremes of temperature . All well-constructed brooders have a small glass-covered run ^ or box * attached to the brood-chamber proper , into which a large per cent , of the warmth from the lamp enters , and so warms it up to a considerable extent , and when...
