An Unique Natural Product . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 February 1907

An Unique Natural Product . One of nature s most wonderful and unique products Is Asbestos . Prior to 1 S 50 , it was looked upon princi pally as a curiosity , although Charlemagne ( Roman Emperor from 800 to 814 A . D . ) Is said to have had a table cloth made of Asbestos , which he cleaned by throwing into fire . There are two varieties of commercial asbestos , known as Amphibole and Chrysotlle . In the former , the fibres are short and without tensile strength , and not suitable for manufacturing many asbestos products . Chrysotlle has a strong and silky fibre , which adapts il for such materials as asbestos fabrics , household utensils , theatre curtains , clothing for firemen , etc . Asbestos Is mined in open pits , similar to stone quarries , and although found in all parts of world , the mines in Quebec . Canada , are most famous , yielding ahout S 5 percent of world s supply of chrysotlle . Largest of these mines is owned by our advertisers . H . W . Johns-Manvllle Co . of N...

IHORTICILTIRE I [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 February 1907

IHORTICILTIRE I A FRUIT AND SHEEP SPECIALIST . Apples and sheep go well together on the same farm , for the latter furnish manure for the former and are useful in destroying the codling moth in an immature state hy cleaning up the early drop apples . The shade furnished by apple trees is acceptable to sheep in hot summer weather . An orchard newly set must , of course , have protection about the trunks from the sheep which might take off some of the hark , but the same wire screen is also a protection from mice in winter . A recent visit to the home of W . L » . Black of Ontario county , N . Y ., was made interesting by the fact that his flock of Shropshires has been improved during the year by the addition of seventeen imported ewes , costing $ 40 apiece . The flock was considered one of the very best previous to this important addition , but an interested shepherd finds satisfaction only when he has exhausted every opportunity for the improvement of his flock . His ewe and ram lam...

VINDICATION . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 February 1907

VINDICATION . We devote considerable space this week to the condensed statements of T Itnesses whose testimony was taken recently in the case ofl the Farmers Co-operative Harvesting Machine Company vs . The Lawrence Publishing Co . It has always been the practice of The ( bio Farmer to protect its patrons from schemes and enterprises that were , for any reason , resting upon insecure foundation or were created and managed for deceiving the unwary . What Mr . Whitelys primary object was in svarting the Farmer Co-opera-tive Co ., we do not know , but abundant evidence presented itself to us after two years , and upwards of its existence , that the concern was not running right and promised loss to those who invested in it . Hence our warning in The Ohio Farmer of Otober 20 last . We now present the evidence so far secured in order to vindicate our position and action in this matter and ask all our readers to carefully peruse the statements made and draw their own conclusions . We wish...
