¦ TCtnORG FARUEBA CXtTB . Meeting ; of Jan . 23 nd . SEBJECT . —Making , Saving and Applying Manures . Henry -Vood said : My plan of making manures consists principally in saving all of my straw , and allowing none of it to go to waste . I stack it all as carefully as I do hay , near my barns . I never allow cattle to run to it , but ! haul it into my cattle , sheep and hog yards as I need it . So soon as the yard gets soft and wet , haul in more straw . I have a pen in whicb 1 fatted 22 hogs last winter . I kept the yard adjoining that , full of straw , and in the Spring drew out 75 loads of the richest of manure . For five years past I have drawn out on nn average , 450 loads of manure ; it was mode by about 30 head of cattle , 200 head of sheep , and 30 hogs . I keep my cattle yarded all wiutcr , except on pleas \ nt davs I let them ruu awhile in the stalks—never on the pastures or meadows , for it injures them badly I have learned of late years , a different method of applyiug m...

Jfarrince Extraordinary . The gossips have watched the extraordinary preparations for the event with more than usual interest . And iu the late ga and happy holidaj season , that joyons time that draws so many half reluctant hearts together , that merges so many lives into one , the nuptials...

EBIE RAILWAY . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 26 January 1870

EBIE RAILWAY . LUXURIES OF MODF . RX TRAVEL . The question which to-day most forcibly presents itself to tho prospective traveler is not By what line can I earliest reach my destination ? ( for running parallel -with each other , the competing lines make the same average time between their Eastern and Western termini ) , but By which route can I travel with tho greatest degree of comfort and of freedom froni those aniioyiiuccs hitherto considered inseparable from a journey of a thousand miles or more ? The inquiry-is easily answuv-d . Seated in one of the spacious aiid luxuriously iiuithed Drawins-room coalies peculiar to- the bron-i gunge Erie Railway , running without change froni Cincinnati , Cleveland , Dunkirk , Buffaloand Rochester t <> New York , the traveler finds laek nsr none of tho comforts and con . venicifces of his own home . Behavior in Church . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 26 January 1870

Behavior in Church . We may classify the patty incivilities . of church life thus : 1 . SMELLS . —Violent perfumes , especially those containing musk , are disagreeable to most persons , and to some positively distressing . There is no smell so universally pleasing as no smell . Never scent yourself when going into a crowded assembly . The same is true of the residuary ¦ mell of tobacco which hangs about the garments and afflicts the breath of those who habitually smoke . But tobacco almost invariably makes men self-indulgent and regardless of others convenience . More brutal yet are they who go to church reeking , like a Dutchman s soup , with the smell of onions . There are scores of people who have lost all profit of a Sunday service by the sickening smells which surrounded them . 2 . SomsDs . —Whispering in church during the service ia an affront lo politeness . Much of the coughing which goes on in church arises from the poisonous gases and personal effluvia which exist in unve...

rra-lttcMflMFatePrr BEGUM * The Progress that have been made In Fruit Culture-St . Joseph and Ita Fr alt Trade . ST . JOSEPH , Mich ., Jan . 10 , 1870 . — As most of your readers have bnt little , if any , knowledge of this now famous fruit region , perhaps , * few words in relation to it will not come amiss . In 1669 , a French voyager visited this point , remaining but a short time . ¦ ¦ Five years later , Father Marquette arrived and located a mission here . Since that day the fortunes of the plaoe have been varied . For many years this was the great point of transit from the East to Chicago—many stage routes centering here , and the travelers taking steamers to cross the lake . After the building of the Michigan Central Boad , these stage routes were discontinued , and the business of the place rapidly declined , and it was almost forgotten by tbe outside world . The appearance of the place was anything bnt inviting to one approaching it from the lake , —most of the buildings be...

oeaumai Honiton Lace . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 26 January 1870

oeaumai Honiton Lace . xne point lace made at Honiton , in Devonshire , England , has been famous , but its manufacture is not now confined to the town front .. which it takes its natu e , buf extends over a great part of the country , especially along the eastern and a put of the southern coast / In the early part of the present century , the lace manufacturers of Honiton emp loyed about 2 , 500 women and children in the town and neighboring villages . Bot the introduction of the hobbinet machinery , about fifty or sixty years ago , greatly injured the trade , though ihe number of persons employed in lace-making in the . whole country is still estimated at from 7 , 000 to 8 , 000 . It is a kind of household manufacture , carried on in the coitages of the poor , and not in large factories . Honiton lace is produced by fixing a prickiny , viz : a perforated pattern of cara-board or parchment upon a cushion called a pillow . Pins are then inserted into theperforations of the pattern ;...

Selected Stort ) , CENTREPOLE BILL . It drizzled unmistably that night- -not in straightforward rain , but in sneaking gusts that glanced down the neck and up the sleeve . I pulled on my coal and splashed out to the gate to see if itweie fast . against wandering cattle . The lights in the house gleamed dimly throngh the mist , asif the wet had reached them too , Even old Don , who followed me ging rly out from the porch , shook his shaggy c > at , and ¦ sniffed his disgust at the weather . Satisfied that all was right I was about returning to shelter , when from around tho corner of the fence came the sound of horses feet , and a heavy wagon sucking and groaning up the inclined . A low , prolonged growl , from the dog greeted the coming team , and 1 waited a moment to see who conld be traveling at such a time and in such a sorry storm . There soon came abreast of the gate a huge wagon , drawn by six mules , which I could barely see - through the fog , Attiacted by the fir...

THE VINEYARDS OF CHAMPAGNE . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 26 January 1870

THE VINEYARDS OF CHAMPAGNE . Vine Cnltnre , and Wine Statistics . Paris Correspondence of Ihe N . Y . Times . The principal cms of champagne are those of Ay Verzenny and Cramant , but those ot Ay are especially remarkable for their delicacy and flavor . The land on which these wines are produced is , I need not say expensive . The hectare ( two and one-half acres ) in the best situations costs from 25 , 000 to 30 , 000 francs , ( 86 , 000 , ) and and the yearly labor bestowed upon it , amounts to 1 . 500 franks more . The annual expense cannot , unfortunately , be fixed at that sum , for the price of labor is yearly increasing , owing to the scarcity of hands . For this reason an effort is being made to encourage immigration from Germans , but the TJijited States offering greater inducements in that quarter it is not very successful . The vetulange or gathering of the grape takes place in favorable years in the month of September , and In ordinary years in the month of October . In ...
