4%%%%%i^%% CHAPTER V.(Continued.) "Miss Huddlestone I was begin ning to interrupt him when he, in turn, cut in brutally: "You hold your tongue," says he "I tun speaking to that girl." "That girl, as you call her, is my wife," said I, and my wife only leaned a little nearer, so that I knew ghe had affirmed my words. "Your what?" he cried. "You He!" "Northmour," I said, "we all know you have a bad temper, and I am the last man to toe irritated by words. For all that I propose that you speak lower, for I am convinced that we are not alone." He looked round him. and it was plain my remark had in some degree eobered his passion. "What do you mean?" he asked. I only said one word, "Italians." He swore a round oatli and looked at us from one to the other. "Mr. Casallls knows all that I know," said my wife. "What I want to know," he broke out,'"is where the devil Mr. Cassllis cornea from, and what the devil Mr. Cassilis is doing here. You say you are married that I do not believe. If you we...

General Considerations. Catarrh in the sense in which it is here used is any inflammation of the mucous mem branes of the head, viz., mouth, throat, nasal passages, and eye sock ets, accompanied by the formation of a deposit, exudate or membrane upon the affected parts, which may accumulate to such an extent as to cause a dis charge, or completely fill the cavity which the mucous membrane lines. Thus when the inflammation affects the mucous membrane lining the nasal passages there is more or less redness of the latter, accompanied by a dis charge from the nostrils, which dis charge may become thickened so as to close the opening of the nostrils and obstruct the breathing. In the same way the mucous membrane lining the eye socket may be similarly affected and a watery fluid escapes which bat...

The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY. Publishers Entered in the postoflice at Bernidji a& second-class matter. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY. Official County and City Paper. GIVE GAMBLERS A VACATION. ThePiONEEKhas been endorsed by many business men on the stand we have taken that rotten ness should end in Bemidji, and that it is time to take our place with the respectable business towns of the state. They are tired of,living down the hard ships which fall upon any town advertised as the mecca for gamblers and lopse characters. In natural resources Bemidji is in the center of great prospects but its development is retarded and its energy is misdirected by catering to low characters. If Bemidji is to be run by tin-horn gamblers and divt" keepers legitimate business men will suffer. During the firemen's tourna ment there will be hundreds of visitors here whom Bemidji should entertain as honorable guests, and not as lambs to be fleeced. We should not allow them to be steered into th...

Monday last the decorations about the city were virtually com pleted, and the dense forest of spruce, pine and balsam fringe at the edges of the sidewalks for the distance of more than a dozen blocks presented a beautiful fringe that was much admired by all, especially those who came from outside the pine belt, and they numbered thousands. The Bemidji Pioneer. KAISER & GREELEY, Publishers Entered in the pcstoffice at Bemidji as second-class matter. PUBLISHED EVEUTL THURSDAY. Official County and City Paper. SOME PYROTECHNICS. It would seem to be almost time for the country republican press to call the attention*of the city dailies to the fact that the last presidential campaign was won for the republican party and all that it represents, and not for "tariff reform" nor for "tariff for revenue only." The singular attitude of the Pioneer Press, Dispatch and Journal on the Bab cock resolution would indicate that somehow and somewhere a free trade writer or two had in gratiated themselves into the editorial sanctums of those papers. For no longer is pro tection to American industries propagated no longer do we read that the home market is the best market in the world no longer do we read that trade treaties are the solution of tariffs for pro tection no longer is reciprocity hailed as an amicable bestowal of mutual tra...

VOL. VI, NO. 17. Funds are Insufficient The Managers of the Firemen's Association Fail to Make Ends Meet. NO MONEY TO PAY THE BILLS Too Much Money Was Paid for Illegitimate ExpensesFlew Too High. Last week the sixth annual tournament of the Northern Minnesota Fremen's Tournament Association was held in this city For several weeks the officers of the association and the local committee were busily engaged in raising funds and making ar rangements for the proper enter tainment of the firemen, and it was supposed that sufficient cash had been collected to bear all ex penses, but from some cause the amount was extremely short. The Bemidji team winnings were $320, and it received only '$254. The Bemidji band con tracted to play during the five days of the tournament for $300, and well did they earn the money but not one cent was left for them, and as the matter now stands the supposition is that the city will liquidate the billor they will have furnished music gratis. *r The management p...
