THE CAUCASIAN. Official Journal of the City of Shreveport. -55 THURSDAY. MAY 7, 1903. ABOUT POOR MEN. T'he article quoted and clipped from the Homer G(;uardian-Journal is in line with the views on the same subject. nomination by primary elections, eluci dated editorially in a recent issue of the Caucasian. As we said then, and may reiterate now, the poor man is a handy and a ready grab-on, on which the never weary and the untiring feeders expect to hold their cribs at the public feeding. but the "poor man" has been worn into a superannuated state, into frazzles as it were, until the "poor man," as well as the "horny handed" and the "honest toilers" are protesting and decline to be the footstools of political schemers and of men who would reach power by crawling over their shoulders. The poor man is no idiot, and if he is good enough to vote at a general or a special election, when qualified, he should be equally as good to express his opinion and his choice at a primary election for...

THE CAUCASIAN. Official Journal of the City of Shreveport. SUNDAY. MAY 10. 19o3. SHOULD BE ELECTED. The assessor should be elected. In a self-government there is no office the people are not capable of fill ing. In honor, in expediency. in logic, in common sense, the assessor should be elected by the people. I naturally assume that' those who permitted it in the constitution at the last convention think otherwise, and I will print any argument in full which would prove otherwise. How coy the machine's logicians are becoming of late, by the way!--New Orleans Harlequin. This is a direct assertion, forceful, logical, which no honest man will at tempt to controvert. Politicians and time-servers, the long feeders at the public crib, may be inclined to evade the issue, while cringing the knee or danc ing ready attendance, or giving placid obedience to their master's will-the few who would dominate through the machine-hut even "the master's" will not gainsay the declaration in a self gover...
