WINNSBORO, S. 0. Saturday, December 29, ; 1877. R. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. S. REYNOLDS, Associato EdItor. Organization. At the recent special election in Sumter, for a member of the House of R1eprosentativos, each party had a candidate. As the result was in doubt, some persons unknown broko into the offico of the commissioners of election and carried off several boxes, thus prevonting a count. Tho commissioners will report ' the matter to tho Legislature after the recess. Without having more to say at present about this violenco than that it was entirely unlawful, and leaving it to be investigated by the proper authorities, we proposo to deduce from it a moral. Sumter is one of tho wealthiest and most intelligent counties in the State, and there is no reason why it should not be as surely Democratic now, under the beneficent auspices of the new regime, as any other similarly situated county in the State. Moreover, a month has not elapsod since tho Demoerats there elected a senator...

WINNSBORO, S. C. Tuesday, January 1, : 1877. R. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. S. REYNOLDS, Associato Editor. The Public Debt. We have herotoforo forborne to take any part in tho discussion rola ting to the public debt, becauso tho wholo question is involved in so much obscurity thitt the roport by tho investigating committee is necessary for the predication of any definito conclusion in the matter. But as a diversity of opinion has arison, perliaps it may be well to oxpress what wo tako to be tho sentiment of most of the people. It is this : 1. Thu honest debt of tho State should bo paid dollar for dollar. 2. The fraudulont debt of the State should be ropndiated dollar for doliar. In the hionest dobt we include Cho anto-reconstruction dobtj; and anly debt subsequently incurred, tihe proceeds of which went to the be,o fit of the State and not into the pockots of thieves. Conversely, by the term "fraudulent, debf," wo mean not only tho conversion bonds and Blue Ridge scrip, which rested n...

WINFSDOROI S. 0. Thurssday, yanuaxy 3, ; : :1878. R. MEANS DAVIS, Editor, JNO. B. RIYNOLDS, Associate Editor, IT Is announced authoritatively from Washington that the Demo cratic Senators will hencoforth withhold all aid from the Conkling faction in its struggle with the President. This is eminently wise. Whilo Hayes is not entirely satis factory to the Democrats, the policy of Conkling and Blaino is utterly antagonistio to the peace and prosperity of the country; and the Democrats should seizo every op portunity to oppose them, oven if it be supporting the appointments of the President. Kick Him Out. Some persons argue that from expediency, if for no other reason, Patterson should be sufterod to remain in the United States Senate, in order to frustrate any attempt on the part of the Radicals to un seat Senator Butler and scat Corbin. It is proposed to wait until his term of office expires and then to proccod against him in the courts. This position is untenable. Such a course would...
