An Illinois girl took a ttmiirt way of choosing; a husband. She hud ten lovers, all of whom were anxious to Inks her to their hearts and homes, to minister to her wants and permit her to do their washing. She promised to marry the one who broke up the most prairie laud ou her father's farm in three days. The Graphic recently gave an illustr. tion of the new chromo issued by the Murray Hill Publishing Company, 129 East Twenty-eighth Street, from Bispbara'a painting "Throw Physio to the Dors." The suhiect ia a little girl pbyBicing various spccimcus of the caoiuo race. The scene is a laugh able one, and the different attitudes of the dogs are exceedingly pleasing. It was desigued to illustrate Dr. Foote's aversion, to drugs, and accom panies each copy of his well-known, "Plain Home Talk and Medical Com mon Sense." Tho Doctor's practice is thoroughly "New School," aud in this way he standi prominently out from the profession a successful practitioner. The book is a volume or 912 pages and 200 illustrations, filled with facts and reason relating to mankind, and their social and physical status. The Graphic says of it : "It Is an encyclo pedia of useful knowledge." A noted clergyman of this city testifies to its merits, remarking : "It is a library in itself....

Nevertheless a large portion of that State is timberloss. South of the Platte River lumber for buildings is chiefly obtained from Chicago or the Mississippi River, via the railroad run ning westward from Burlington. But such lumber is expensive, one-lbird more so than in New England, and many a pioneer has no money, or nest to none. How then can a poor man obtain a house? He can build a sod house himself, incurring no expense whatever except for a door aud win dow, which he can buy ready niajje for $4 at any railroad station. The sod-house builder finds his ma tcral ready to his hand, in every fur row of the virgin prairie his plow turns up.
