CAMPBELL & M'DERMOT EDITORS a>D PROPRIETORS. WEDNESDAY *OE5fI*C, DEC. *7. General Carl He bur** Report. Our readers are generally aware, we presume, that last summer and fall General Carl Schurz traveled extensive ly throughout the South,, by invitation and under the aus; ices of the Govern ment, for the purpose of informing the Administration as to the exact condi tion of public sentiment in the late rebel States. He has, as is also gener ally known, made his report to the Pres ident, and a most interesting and in structive document it is, too. He says that throughout his travels he found the South recovering from the peculiar slate of mind into which the surrender of Lee plunged it. At that time "the public mind was so despondent that if readinission at some future time, under whatevercondition, had been promised, it would then have been looked upon as a favor. The most uncompromising rebels prepared for leaving the country, i The masses remained in a state of fear ful expe...

UktSnidligtmiz CAMPBELL & M'DERMOT EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. i THUMDAl MOR.MXO, PEC. 2*. Thr Income Tax. We are gratified to see i? stated that there is a noticeable disposition on the part of several influent;:.1 members of the Committee of Ways and. M,eans in Congress to repeal, at all events to ma terially modify, the existing income tax, which is probably the most odious feature of our tax law. People do not object to paying taxes?that Is not the matter?but they do object to having their business pryed into and disclosed to the world like so many household matters. There is a sacredness and pri vacy about the business matters of men, just as there is about their family mat ters, that outrages every feeling of their natures when overhauled by a stranger aud through him made a subject for gossip aud tattle and misrepresentation on the streets. We do not know?we are hardly prepared to say?that the in come tax should be repealed clear and clean. The privacy of returns should be g...

WautfhAIdligtmK CAMPBELL & M'DEHMOT EDITORS aXD PROPRIETORS. FRIDAY XVRSfiaO, DE<'. 2?. As long as there exists even the ghost of a Mexican Republic?it mast h&ve some sort of a President, we suppose, and so, os Juarez'- form of office has constitutionally *-?pire?l, and the elec tion of a successor, under the circum stances, quite, out of the question,?it was thought, at first, that the honors would devolve on the shoulders of Gen. Ortega> the Vice President. Ortega, it seems, did actually go to El Paso, to see Juarez about it, but Juarez, (so the ru mor ran) did not concur in the views of those who desired him to give way, and this disagreement, it was reported, had given rise to a serious misunderstand ing. not only between the two parties principally concerned, but between tl)eir subordinates and followers, in and out of the army.
