On the opening night he made a peecb, in which he announced hit intention to occasionally bring back the drama to its original purpoM, the illustration of sacred scenes and events, and the representation of the Divine power and goodness, by handling the incidents of Biblical history, so as to exhibit gorgeous scenery and produce thrill ing effects. The drama was originally sacred, and the representations were i'iven in the churches under the management of the Priests. The bliss of the saints, and the torments of the damned, were impressed upon the imagina tions of the people with all the aids of scenery and stage machinery; and Uie miracles were reproduced with great dramatic power.
