c. 1 M |i ii 1 E ! 1 i 1 ( SATURDAY JULY 4.189*. EDITORIAL. GRIEVOUS WRONGS We have repeatedly urged that there is no justice for the colored man as between himself and ? white one. This is fittingly illustrated in the case of R. _?. Ttlrr, white, who shot and wounded J auk Carr, colored. It seems that Carr had an alterca? tion with another whit? man and was getting the better of it when Tyler went into his house, secured a gun and shot Carr. Now, this was a felony of the most aggravated kind. Tvlkr has won his way into the pen? itentiary whether he ever gets there or not. It is easy to contemplate what would have been done had Tyi.kr been color? ed and Carr, white. He would have been railroaded to tbe state's prison. The daily papers would have magnified the nature of his wounds and citizens regardless of color would have been induced to look with radical disfavor upon his action. But it was only a Negro, with a soul, who was feloniously shot, and his would-be murderer was a white ...

SATURDAY JULY ll, 1896. IN MEMORIAM Perseus Richard Steward (By O. M. Steward.) The deepest love that I have known Was for a child that hence hath down, And soared to realms of endless bliss, Wboae heart was mine and mine was his. A boy who only thrice had seen The roses bloom mid fields of green ; Whoae laughing eyes 1 still can see Brim full of mischief, love and glee. They resteth now, those little feet Which ran so swiftly, oft to aieet His fsther whom he loved the b* st, Tho' fully loved he all the rest. The child, indeed, was lovlier than ls common with the sons of men. No earthly thing could dearer lie Than was my Perseus to me. No words or sighs can ever tell The pain, the Borrow, anguish fell, Which this poor heart of mine hath felt, As by his early grave I've knelt, And poured out all my soul to Heav'n, Which did but take what it had given. O. God ! whose sov'reign love alone Canst comprehend and weigh my own, Give thou me faith and grace to bow To all which thou requirest...
