Far the California Mia sialiMi. , of Mil f'macisco. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 28 August 1847

[For the California Star.] Statistics of San Francisco. The town of San Francisco, (Yerba Buena,) is situated on the west side of the great Bay of the same name, and on the northern point of the peninsula which lies between the southern portion of the Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It is about four miles from the narrows or straits by which you enter the Bay from the sea. The immediate site of the present town is an indentation or cove in the western shore of the Bay, directly in front of which, and at the distance of about two miles, lies a large island called Yerba Buena Island. From the water's edge the land rises gradually for more than half a mile to the west and southwest, until it terminates in a range of hills of five hundred feet in height at the back of the town. To the north of the town is an immense bluff, (or rather, three in one,) more than five hundred feet high, which comes down to the water's edge with precipitous sides of from twenty to one hundred feet in height. [ For the California Star.] MAJOR CLOUD — At a meeting of the military officers stationed at Monterey, California, on the 14th August 1847, to express their feelings of respect for the memory of the late Paymaster Cloud, who was recently killed by a fall from a horse near Captain Sutter;s. Col. Mason of the 1st. Dragoons took the chair, and Lieut. Sherman. 3d. Fanny Kemble's Re-Appearance On The Stage. -- ln the Eagle of Vera Cruz, we note the following extract from a London paper, by wbich it will be sees that Mrs. Butler is again upon the 'boards." Her Debut was made in the play of the Hunchback : When Mrs. Butler appeared in the first scene, she was received with a burst of applause. She looks much thinner than when we saw her last, in 1832. and her features bear traces of checquered health and much houghtfulness. In the first scene she describes to Helen, with girlish artlessness, the charms of country life. It seemed to want something of the gashing joyousness of the spring of life, but the scene was played with taste. Subsequently, when Clifford appears in the same scene her mingled embarrassment and pleasure, the first promptings of youthful love, were beautifully discriminated. In the second act Julia becomes intoxicated with London life. Her description of its brilliant pleasures -- of her contemplated gayety and extravagance whe...
