SAN FRANCISCO — The search for a cell phone starts with one big question: Should you get a smart phone that lets you customize your device with all kinds of applications, or should you save money and get a not-so-smart phone that has fewer functions? Microsoft Corp. thinks it has two new phones that could bridge the gap. Its Kins, which cost $ 50 or $ 100 through Verizon Wireless, are geared toward social networking-obsessed teens and 20-somethings who want an affordable way to keep in touch on the go without diving into additional apps like Apple Inc.’ s iPhone offers. brother. I also liked that the Kin screens respond to multiple finger gestures for zooming in and out of photos and, if you dare load them, Web pages. Overall, Microsoft has a lot of work to do on the Kins if it wants to truly straddle the divide between smart phones and feature phones. I’m skeptical that young consumers will be thrilled with this first effort. It has the looks and some good features, but beyond that...

My mother told me about the life lessons she learned during the Great Depression. ( Well… perhaps you would trade for a plate of "Pacific Cookie Company" cookies, but that's the rare exception). While the way my mother handled money may seem unsophisticated, given all the financial tools that are available today, the basics of living below our means, saving for a rainy day, avoiding excessive debt and hunting for a bargain are age-old values that we can all still benefit from today. In a society where everything is pre-made and sold for convenience, it may be hard to remember the last time you had a meal made from scratch. What my mother knew and what my wife knows is that not only is it less expensive to cook this way, but the resulting meal is almost always much more delicious. Think about it. Would you ever consider trading in a plate of your mother's homemade cookies for any store-bought brand? the time to look for a bargain. That meant doing research and waiting until the price...

Cyclists, motorists really can share the road Animal services helps with ailing stray cat Over the years I have heard many complaints about bicyclists’ lack of regard for others using our roads and sidewalks. I agree that there is some blatant discourteous and dangerous behavior out there. I would like to see this change for the better. After acknowledging this, I want to give praise and thanks for the cyclists who ride with respect for others, and who ride out of personal convictions in spite of self sacrifice. They are out there in spite of many road hazards, adverse weather, personal inconvenience, etc. Cyclists should not be treated as second-class citizens. Motorists might appreciate that each cyclist represents one less automobile on our crowded streets, along with all the other associated benefits of less fossil fuel consumption, cleaner air, less wear on roads, fewer parking impacts and healthier minds and bodies. Please do give due respect and thanks. JOHN BEHRENS, Santa Cr...
