Support of anti-trap bill urged [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 30 January 1980
Support of anti-trap bill urged Los Angeles City Council backing of federal legislation aimed at ending the use, of steel-jawed traps to snare animals was urged Thursday (Jan. 24) by Councilman Arthur K Snyder. Snyder introduced a motion in the Council that would place the City of Los Angeles in support of House Resolution 1297, authored by Congressman Clarence D. Long (D) Maryland. The measure would bar the shipment of furs and leather goods from states without a ban on the "manufacture, sale, or use of leghold or steel jaw traps." It would impose the same restriction on fur and leather imports to the United States from countries that do not prohibit such traps. “By removing the profit from catching animals in steel-jawed leghold traps, this measure will virtually end one of the most barbaric practices in the modern world,” Councilman Snyder stated. ‘‘Many of the unfortunate animals ensnared in these traps bleed to death or die of shock. Others linger for days in pain and misery un...
