Dmrret—The Mormon ■!•«*. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 28 January 1850

Dmrret— The Mormon ■!•«*. Gradually the convittion has forced itself apon us that the mysterious people, gathered upon the shores of the Great Salt Lake, have in reality undertaken tho organization which tho U. States press proclaimed several months since, and which wonderful intelligence we, incredulous Mill considered just about at worthy belief as a laboriously " got up " second edition of tho moon hoax, or another " discovery of a great sea snake." Wo $re now disposed to make tho amende honorable fur our skcpticalncss, and affirm tho whole story to bo most unequivocally, marvclously correct. Hut wo do not wish to he understood us reooding from the position which wo then maintained Wo still incline to tho helief that the circumstances of this state organization arc remarkable. and the history of the announcement of the event on tho whore* of tho Pacific is incredible. That theso tidings, conveyed across the continent, as thoy were, carried with a blast from the pftH to the remote...

\<l loU-loii of ( HI 110 l ol.i. Our brethren in the east are profuse in their praises of the State Constitution, adopted by the peoplo of California, and they are rejoiced to welcome to a political union our youthful State ; but especially pleased aro our northern people with the provision made by the State Convention against slavery. The wildest enthusiasm greeted the tidings of this action, and tho newspapers of the northern States went into ecstacies in announcement of the fact. This is indeed very gratifying to the framors of the instrument, which has forever annihilated the question of slavery on the soil of California ; but we have our fears that this step, so irreconcilable with the doctrines and views of a powerful party, will prove disastrous to our hopes of early admission into the Union. Indeed, wo have already enough to assure us that our fears are well grounded, in the various opinionß put forth by the press of the north and south. Good Humor.— Suceese ever ...
