SENSENBRENNER, Manf. 1039-1047 Fourth St. SAN DIEGO MEN IN HIGH PLACES. There are several distinguished foreigners in camp who have vainly tried to hide their names from the public. Our band of secret service workers have discovered that the Hon. Bertie Manners, a captain in one of the crack regiments of the British army, and who will, some day, have a handle to his name as long as a frying pan, is located near 22d street, and Rufus Long, one of the best known politicians of New Zealand, is also spending idle moments around the same vicinity. Almost at the other end of the camp resides a quiet unassuming gentleman who reminds us much of "Allan Quartermain," H. Rider Haggard's great hunter. Our visitor has probably captured and slain more wild animals than all other residents of San Diego county put together. The conversation of this gen...

Long before the performance commenced on Thursday night every seat in the theatre was occupied and there was little available standing room space to be had. The crowd was expectant of something out of the ordinary, for Prof. Peck, the magician, was to give an exhibition showing his ability to get away from any handcuff fastened on him. At his invitation four persons with manacles walked upon the stage. They were our local officers Dow and Burloch, and Sergeant George Couts of the San Diego force, and a visiting policeman from Oakland. They brought with them a dozen or so pairs of handcuffs, all of which were considered infallible. It must have been a severe blow for these peace officers to see this mystery man handle their cuffs like so...
