VOL. 32 NO. 40 By BOB ALLEN The recollections of Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Kendall J. Fielder concerning the December 7 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor will be interspersed throughout the following article. Gen. Fielder was a lieutenant colonel at the time and Intelligence Officer for the Hawaiian Department. The retired intelligence officer was interviewed especially for the SENTINEL through special consideration of Lt. Col. Billy L. Spangler USARPAC Deputy Information officer. Civilian and military inhabitants of the sleepy island of Oahu were beginning to stir in the early morning hours of December 7 1941. The day was only slightly overcast and the glowing haze made the peaceful island appear even more so. At Pearl Harbor on the southern tip of Oahu about six miles west of Honolulu the entire U.S. Pacific fleet was moored with the exception of the two air craft carriers. Flag-raising ceremonies aboard the ships were ready to begin. It was 7:30 a.m. still too early for any activity to be occ...

KWASNIEWSKI December is more than a "3" day month consisting of Christmas Hanukka and Pearl Harbor. Days recorded in history but seldom remembered by us also commenmorate events that have touched our nation. On the cold clear day of Dec. 15 1791 the rights we so cherish today took effect the passage of the Bill of Rights—a day so vital to our legal system and moral outlook. That day would have taken place had not Dec. 21 1620 found the Pilgrims on Plymouth Rock. It was a day when the seeds of this nation were sown in pain and hardship. A masquerade party held in the wee hours of Dec. 16 1773 served notice to the British that taxed tea wasn...

Friday December 7 1973 By CLEM HUGHES Monday morning arrived the Pvt. Joe Smidlapp awoke by "barracks noise" (locker doors slamming bunks scraping the floor etc:) at 6:30 a.m. Private Smidlapp thought someone tampered with his alarm clock since it failed to awaken him at 6 o'clock that morning. So grabbing his electric tooth brush and shave kit Joe shuffled to the latrine to shower and shave for the morning inspection. When JOE ENTERED THE LATRINE HE SAW A MOST UNUSUAL SIGHT. He saw his bay buddies shaving by candle light! Adding two two Joe guessed the power was off in the barracks. Unable to do anything about the electricity Joe en tered the shower but-upon 14 through Bargains will be sprinkled throughout each store. Page Four-A Critical look at past makes future stronger Pearl Harbor no doubt was a significant moment in United States history. However there are probably many who will question the use of the front page of the SENTINEL as a commemorative vessel for a past event. Pearl Harbor could serve as a warning against complacency the "it couldn't happen to us" isolationist attitude or as it might be referred to today "it couldn't happen to us again" theory. Man unlike the lower animals possesses the gift to profit from his mistakes and tragedys. And history is full of mistakes that through careful study and consideration have not been repeated for the most part. Pearl Harbor 32 years ago today showed the ef fects of illprepared defenses. An entire fleet was clustered in a small harbor making a beautiful target for the Japanese aircraft. Likewise the planes at the naval and Army airfields on Oahu were lined up along .the. runways in perfect order and were con sequently blown to pieces. Surp...
