regionalnews Wichita ;alls church recruits pastor from San Francisco After leading 500-member church on West Coast, Brown set to be installed as leader of 55-member MCC in North Texas By David Webb Staff Writer The Wichita Falls Metropolitan Community church will install the Rev. Lea Brown as its new pastor on Sunday. Brown formerly served as a volunteer on the clergy staff of the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco before accepting the position with the 55-member, 19-year-old Texas church. She led worship services, retreats and programs for the 500-member California church before moving to Texas. Brown said although she misses the ocean and the fog after living 18 years in San Francisco, she is excited by the challenge of leading the church in Wichita Falls. "I just adore the congregation," Brown said. "I so admire the courage of these people to be who they are." Brown said Wichita Falls has "tons and tons" of GLBT residents who are not affiliated with the church that sh...

nationalnews Lesbian poses as male to research manhood "Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey Into Manhood and Back" chronicles author's 18 months spent mingling with men, dating women By Colleen Long Associated Press Surplus! Overstocked! Cabinets, Doors, Floors, Trim, Sinks, Tubs, Faucets, Windows and Much More! NEW YORK — The only time Norah Vincent was ever accused of being too feminine was when people thought she was a man. And when she bound her breasts, wore a pressed blue suit, a fake penis and faux stubble, and went to strip clubs and men's groups to research her book, "Self-Made Man: One Woman's Journey Into Manhood and Back" she realized how undeniably female she is. The result is an intimate account of the 18 months Vincent spent as "Ned," penetrating tight circles meant only for men. It's hard to imagine Vincent passing as a guy, though she does betray a sort of androgynous quality. She's tall with seri- ously large feet. Her graying hair is closely cropped and she has str...

localnews Continued from Page 16 opponents raised $6.5 million, according to the study by The Institute on Money in State Politics, a nonpartisan research organization in Helena, Mont. The single largest block of givers were advocates of gay and lesbian rights, donating more than $3 million. Conservative organizations affiliated with a network called the Arlington Group gave nearly $2 million, the report found. Churches also invested heavily, contributing $1.9 million, over- whelmingly in favor of bans on same-sex mar- riage. Despite the nearly even split of the $13.3 mil- lion raised by ballot committees, the amendments passed overwhelmingly, sometimes by as much as a 3-to-l ratio. The closest vote, in Oregon, passed with 57 percent in favor of a ban and 43 percent against. The two sides together spent more than $2 mil- lion in each of several battleground states, includ- ing Michigan, Oregon and Ohio. But much less went into campaigns elsewhere, with under $100,000 spent in a half...

\ Samuel A. AlitoJr. AUTO Continued from Page 1 tinue through Friday and perhaps longer. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, urged senators to oppose Alito's confir- mation to the Supreme Court. "The Senate should vote against Judge Alito and the consider- able threat he poses to the American value of fair- ness," said Solmonese in a statement. "The eight senators who voted against Judge Alito's confir- mation understand that balance, not extremism, belongs in the court. When it comes to protecting fairness, partisanship can't be a part of the equa- tion." Solmonese said that Alito's resume "reads like an anti-gay textbook." Alito opposed a policy that protected gay students from harassment and he believes Congress' power to enact nondiscrimi- nation laws should be checked, he said. Retiring Justice Sandra O'Connor's swing vote should be replaced by a moderate one, not Alito's, which is expected to be harshly conserva- tive, Solmonese said. "As the critical vote i...

NATIONAL BRIEFS From Staff and Wire Reorts Gay rights law supporters rally on state Capitol steps in Washington More than 1,000 gay rights supporters rallied on the Capitol steps, calling for passage of a gay civil rights law bill that appears to have sufficient support this year after nearly 30 years of failure in the state Legislature. Wearing "I'm for Equality" buttons and carry- ing signs that read "Equality for All of God's Children," supporters listened Monday to law- makers and religious leaders who support the measure that would add "sexual orientation" to a state law that bans discrimination in housing, employment and insurance. Sixteen states have passed similar laws. "We are on the brink of doing something truly remarkable," Governor Chris Gregoire told the cheering crowd. '^Finally, after far too many years, the state is going to take a stand to say that gay and lesbian individuals living in our great state have the right to be valued and considered to be as worthy as an...

pregnancy was legalized in predominantly Catholic Italy in 1978, after a long battle between the Vatican and secular forces. Recently, the abortion pill RU-486 became available in parts of Italy on an experimental basis. Ruini's bishops' conference has mounted a renewed fight against abortion and the RU-486 pill, turning abortion into a campaign issue for the first time since Italians upheld the law in a 1981 referendum sponsored by the church in a bid to overturn it. Earlier this month, Pope Benedict XVI chimed in on both issues, telling Italian officials that doc- tors should not give women the abortion pill because it hides the "gravity" of taking a human life, and that it was wrong to give legal recogni- tion to gay unions. A similar proposal is being debated in Lithuania." Case against student who called policeman's horse gay is dismissed A college student in Oxford, England, who was arrested for calling a policeman's horse "gay" saw his case dismissed by the Oxford Magistrates'Court on Jan. 12. The court cited a lack of evidence that Sam Brown's remark violated the Public Order Act, which prohibits homophobic statements that are "likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress." Brown, 21, had said to a mounted policeman, "Excuse me, do you realize your horse is gay?" He was hauled off to jail for the night and later taken to court for refusing to pay a $140 fine. Most new AIDS cases in Hawaii are among men Associated Press HONOLULU — A state health official said he's disappointed that the number of new AIDS cases in Hawaii hasn't fallen over the past six years. There were 109 new AIDS cases in the state last year, which is also average for the past six years. Of the cases last year, 58 were reported on Oahu, 18 in Maui County, 12 on the Big Island and 21 on Kauai. "We would think by now we would be seeing fewer cases since treatment has been available for some time," said Peter Whiticar, head of the Health Department's STD/AIDS Prevention Branch. Of the new AIDS cases, 89 percent were male. Male-to-male sex remains the most common risk factor, cited in 62 percent of the cases. More than half, 58 percent, were Caucasian with Asians accounting for 12 percent and Hawaiians-Pacific Islands 8 percent.
