iisiiitifii Measles Outbreak Threatens Spring Break in South Texas by Sue Ann Biggs RN Due to a recent measles outbreak in South Texas the Public Health department is suggesting a second measles immunization for anyone born after 1-1 -57if you have not had a second immunization. Measles are highly contagious. Antibotics are NOT available to persons infected with this organism. Recent outbreaks have included many hospitalizations and several deaths among college-aged persons. Most young adults have only had one dose. If you do not know whether you have had the second measles immunization you are urged to find out! If you have turned in a student health form the Student Health office will have the record. Call this office at ext. 1252 or come by Moody Center room 202 to check on your immunization. Since it takes 10-21 days after the immunization for your immunity to be effective it is recommended you do not go into areas that have a known outbreak of measles. I would suggest you not g...

KKSTOFOTBS lillli Spring Breakers Head to South (Continued from page 1) attract students. The water (in the Gulf of Mexico) is still to cold to jump in but that's not what they're here for anyway." Marcucci said that most of Florida's coastal cities welcome students because of the tremendous boost to the local economy especially since Florida tour- ism as a whole fell for the first time in 12 years in 1991. Walt Disney World in Orlando is offering park tickets to students with an I.D. for $22 for one day (regularly $33) or $40 for two days. The only city discouraging visits from the Spring Break crowd is Fort Lauder- dale where strict open container and other drinking laws went into effect after wild beer riots and the deaths of some students a few years ago. On South Padre Island the local po lice department encourages hotels and businesses to hire additional private secu- rity. Texas state alcohol agents target the area to keep an eye on underage drinkers and the state highway pat...

iSlatuHel Students Forced to Repay Part of Aid (CPS)--An estimated 95000 university students at 172 Illinois colleges and universities are being forced to repay a portion of financial aid that they received through a state agency. Students from private and public colleges throughout the state will be billed for 12 percent of the amount they received the second semester from the Monetary Award Program administered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. "Parents are upset about this but we had no choice" said Bob Clement director of public information for the commission. "We were mandated to make these cuts. The state is suffering financially." Officials cite low state revenues and soaring demands as reason for a 2.6 percent cut in appropriations for the grant program. Statewide the appropriation was cut from $183.3 million to $179.9 million. Overall Gov. Jim Edgar's recent budget cuts cost Illinois higher education about $50 million. At Northern Illinois University 3400 stude...

Student Experiences Thrill of Bungee Jumping First Hand by Amy Reynolds ORLANDO Fla. (CPS)--First I watched. As bungee jumper after jumper leaped 200 feet off a crane my excitement and enthusiasm evaporated-I realized that I wasn't as thrilled about the idea of leaping off a crane head-first with a cord attached to my ankles as I was pretending to be. Bungee jumping? You're out of your mind I kept saying to myself. Remember you're afraid of heights. I nervously wiggled my toes in my socks as I stood shoeless on the crane's gondola hoping that the Velcro laces and metal hooks that strapped my ankles to the cord were strong enough to keep me attached in flight thereby preventing me from bouncing my forehead off the ground. OK I told myself this won't be so bad. At least I wasn't jumping over an alligator-infested lake as advertised at another bungee-jumping spot. If I fell I'd hit a stunt pillow. I took a deep breath as the gondola began to rise. The jumpmaster began giving me instruc...

Athlete Continues to Play Despite Alleged Assault TALLAHASSEE Fla. (CPS) A Florida Board of Regents inquiry has revealed that a star basketball player continued to play for the University of South Florida although it was alleged that he had harassed battered or raped six women. The report charged that top university administrators knew of the charges and withheld information to allow Marvin Taylor to continue to play basketball. DanWalboltavicepresident and supervisor of the school's athletic program resigned under pressure Jan. 3 1 after the regent's report charged that he intervened in the case to get charges dropped against Taylor. Walbolt wrote in a report that one of the victims decided to "recant" her charges although the woman insists she did not. University President Francis Borkowski faces an appearance before a regents investigative panel to explain the school's handling of the case. A special committee made up of the university's Faculty Senate last year demanded an accou...

itfmteta Guest Editorial BlilirlilSlSlmfflSnl "Neither a borrower nor a lenderbe. " I am sure you have all heard someone say that usually when they did not want to lend you fifty cents for a Coke. But why shouldn't we "borrowers be?" Many of us will find out when we graduate and have to start paying back our school loans. Many people of all ages also use another form of borrowing called buying on credit. Both kinds of borrowing- loans and credit-can get people into financial trouble. That is why I urge you not to borrow or use credit. There are two main reasons. First when you take out a loan or buy an item on credit that you cannot pay back in one month you end up paying more for the item than the original price. This is because of interest. The second reason it is best not to borrow or buy on credit is summed up in the little Biblical Proverb "And the borrower is a servant to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7). When you borrow or use credit you become almost indebted or enslaved to the b...
