The following appeared in the '' Fan* ciers' Gazette ' of November 7 : — ' Few dogs have enjoyed a more popular career than the fox terrier Railway Jack who died at Lewes a few days ago, when upwards of 12 y*ars old. It was owing to thiB that he acquired a' taste for travelling, for be was a regular passenger for several years to various stations on the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway, and sometimes he wandered even further, hav ing been occasionally seen in Scotland and the extreme South of England. It is a curious fact that be always knew what trains to take to Lewes, and always changed at the right places. One day, however, be missed his footing when crossing the line at Norwood Junction, and one of his legs was cut off by a passing train, since which time, about five years, he has gone about upon three legs. lie has several times been benched as an attraction at dog bIiovvs at. MEETINGS. ZEEHAN INSTITUTE. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 12 January 1891

MEETINGS. ZEEHAN INSTITUTE. A meeting was held on Friday evening in the English Church building to discuss the existing state of affairs connected with the Zeehan Institute, and to devise gome means of improvingthem. Mr C Littler was elected Chairman, and in introducing the subject of the meeting, stated that in midwinter last year a strong society was formed under favourable auspices on the same lines as many musical unions, for the purposes of recreation, benefit, and good fellowship of its mem bers — that for several reasons the Institu tion had languished, and was now ' in ex tremis.' He called uppn Mr F. M. Brid ley, as one of the conveners, to explain to the meeting what was projected in view of reviving the Society. Mr Bridley, in response, said he would rather shunt bis task on to someone else, and called upon Mr H. A. Lovett to for mulate gome plan, on the principle of ' juniores ad labores.' Mr A. A New Stock Exchange for Zeehan. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 12 January 1891

A New Stock Exchange for Zeehan. A number of pentlemen met at Mr. Pead's office on Friday afternoon, in re sponse to a circular that had been sent round, to consider the necessity of forming another Exchange for Zeehan. Tliero were present — Messrs Pead. Rose, Cox, Whitelaw, Calder, Bridley, Eagle, Thom son, Clarke, and TJrqubart. ? Mr Urqubart was voted to the chair, and read the circular convening the meet ing. He stated a feeling existed that another Exchange was required of a loss restrictive character than the one at pre sent in existence ; that the entrance fees had been raised by that body to a sum almost prohibitory to those who were not shareholders, but who wished to watch stocks for the purpose of investment. He also thought it would be to the interest of mining that two Exchanges existed, and that one should help the other. Mr Pead proposed, and Mr Climie seconded, — '' That an Exchange be formed consisting of 20 members, to be called the Zeehan and Dundas Exchange.' Car...

MINING. [BY OUR SPECIAL, MR. a. D. GIBSON j Mount Dokda.6. In my extended peregrinations towards the end of the year I bad an opportunity of examining some of the ground to the north-east of Maestries and was agreeably surprised with what I stw. In following the high leading spur east ward from the Comet's old camp, the first property crossed is the Victorian Proprie tary, consisting of two sections, originally known as Paul Behrs. Of this ground I had not an opportunity of making a thorough examination, but noticed very good surface indications and it i- well situated for prospecting and working. The Meteor. Some distance beyond is situated the above property, consisting of an 80 acre section, No. 2575, in name of J. Johnson.' Here I found an adit had been begun, about 30 ft having been driven, at a considerable height above the valley to intersect a large lode, which is outcropping on tke hill above. Where exposed in a cutting the lode shows a width of nearly two chains, consistin...

RAILWAY MEETING AT ZEEHAN. [Newspaper Article] — Zeehan and Dundas Herald — 14 January 1891

RAILWAY MEETING AT ZEEHAN. The largest meeting we have 3iad al Zeehan was held at Anderson's Hotel on Monday eveniug last. Mr Myring explained an error made in the ' Herald,' where it was made to appear that Mr Norton Smith had invited renidents to meethim.when it was really the suggestion of a number of the townspeople ' that his presence on the field should be taken advantage of, in order that residents might learn the nature of .the proposal .'tnadc.'l»v thfi Emu Hav and Riw.linffi Roil. way Company to connect Zeehan with Waratah. He then moved Mr Elburn to the chair. . The chairman said that the more outlets the field had, the better it would be for it. At present it only had the the sea, and that is not always to be relied upon. In the past we have narrowly escaped starving, and we are likely to have a re currence of the starvation time, unless the Strahau railway is opened before' the win ter. What we want is connection with the North West Coast (applause). We never see vegeta...
