THE OhOHAhD. ORIGINAL ARTICLES. PEACHES. Preserved Peaches: Choose fine large peaches ripe, but not too mellow, pare and halve; allow as many pounds of white sugar as of fruit ; and to one pound of sugar allow a tcacup of water. Maka a syrup with sugar and water ; skim tho syrup if necessary and add the fruit. Simmer slowly until clear. When done put fruit in jars; Boil syrup until thick, then pour over the peaches. Seal the jars effectually so as tt- exclude the air. To Can Fresh Fruit Without Sugar : Proeure a sufficient number of tin cans of suitable size, fill them quito full with the fruit, and solder them in the tins securely. Next pierce a small hole in tho top of each can, in order to allow the air to be expelled ; place the cans in a boiler as deep as the cans arc high, pour boiling water into tho boiler until within half an inch of the top cf the cans ; keep the water hot over a moderate fire, but not boiling, until the aie ceases to escape from the cans, which may bo asce...

Hay Police Court, Thursday — Before R, Gibson, Esq, J.P, Holjert Brain was charged with having no lawful visible mentis of sup port, He pipaded guilty, and Constable Langsford deposed that at about 1 1 a m. on Wednesday he wont to the Marked Tree Point, and there saw the aooused, wJio said lie liad been there three or four weeks ; he had no swag,, having burnt it because ' it was no good,' He said he had no rations, but sometimes went into town for a bit ; he said he could live without food when ho could not get it easily. He had no money, and it was about eleven weeks since he had done any work, and then it was only for two or three days. Witness had heard that accused was iu the habit of begging food. All he possessed at the camp was a billy and pannikin ; witness found on him at the lock-up a knife and pipe, but no money. General Kcw$. The total number of deatlis from arsenic-poisoning in the Manchester district, caused by drinking poisoned beer, is stated to be 85. The death is announced of Major Serpa Pinto, the dis tinguished irortuguese ex plorer of Central Africa, aged 54 years. [In 1877-79, Major Serpa Pinto crossed Africa, from Benguela to Durban. He described his journey in a book entitled, 'How I crossed Africa' (London, 1881).] Large pigeon lofts for mili tary purposes have been estab lished at Aldershot, the Cry stal Palace, and elsewhere.. The official returns show that the 650 bankruptcies occurred in the colony dur ing 1900, being seven more than in the previous year.
