Notice to Correspondents. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

Notice to Correspondents. MR. YOULE, alnd other correspondents on the subject of the Clerk of the Works, this is the last time we intend to Insert any communication on the subject of the Clerk of the Works ; his retention is an insult to the district, and we must hold the Council responsible for thus spending the money of the public. The Mayor and Councillors may be insulted with im punity by Mr. Orr, they have a right to consult tlieii own feelings on that; but they have no right to be more liberal with the public morniy. than they would with their own.

To the Editor of the McIvor Times. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

To the Editor of the JUcloor Times. SIR,-I wonder how long the rate. ayers of this district will continue to tolerate the squandering of their money ipon useless loafers like the now notorious 'Clerk of Works." When on their way to their several places of worship on a Sabbath morning they meet or pass him bolding on by the pailings, or drawing himself up by the verandah post, how very satisfactory must be the reflection, that they have the honor to contribute the funds for the maintenance of such an xbhibition. The main road through the borough, metalled at great cost, is allowed to go into the most disgraceful state for want of a labourer's wages to fill in the cuts. Life and property have been daily jeopardized for want of a crossing of some kind over the creek to Costerfield; and we can pay fortnight after fortnight, our E9, to anybody who may have been for tunate enough to secure the order to receive from the indispensable Clerk. I have tried twice in.the Council to get rid of t...

(To the Editor of the McIvor Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

(To the Editor of the Mcfvor Times.) Smi,-I have often been amused when reading the reports of the Municipal Council, at seeing the beer-selling gentle men the only champions of a drunken servant. I happen to know that this Clerk of all Works, used to be verr busy with a certain Brewer from Kyneton-as a sort of sub-agent-to visit the different public-houses, whose word was sufficient to induce Publicans to give an order. I have heard the said Sub say that he could never do with Tierney's, as he always felt a little giddy after a dozen pints; not so with Mr. - Kyneton brewed beer, it only had the effect of making him see double, and filling him with so much im portance that the Town Hall was only a secondary consideration with him. How could it be possible that he could help paying a visit to every public-house, when they were so fortunate as to get some of the beer that he so ably recommended! Query, does he get paid for puffing Kyneton beer? People would be likely to take his word,...

GALLAT RESCUE. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

GALLAT RaESCUE.-A near relative of the boy whose narrow escape froni death is referred to belov sends the following narrative to the Argus :-" On the forty fifth day out of the Champion of the Seas, on her late voyage from Liverpool to this port, when off the Cape of Good Hope, Robert Gibson, a boy eleven and a half yeats, when in the act of drawing water, about six o'clock in the morning, fell over board. The ship's way was thirteen knots per hour at the time, with a heavy sea running. The accident, fortunately, was perceived by one of the crew, a buloy was thrown out, and the cry reaching the captain he. sprang from his bed, was instantly on the deck, and with the utmost promptitude had the ship put abost. The lifeboat, with a gallant crew, was instantly - owered into the sea that threatened almost certain destruction. By this time oearly all the passerigers were on deck, and iney watched with anxious suopense 'the progress of the little boat, which, elevated for a few seconds on ...

(To the Editor of the McIvor Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

(To the Editor of the Mclvor Times.) Scs,-The most paramount duty incul cated among Chinamen is, to give the dead a decent burial, to prevent, if possi ble, the slightest profanation of their last resting-place, and to liquidate, morever, all just debts which may have been owed by any departed friend, or relation; in fact, if any Chinaman happen to die in Chins involved in debt, nnd is known to have any friend, or relation, his creditors usually retain the corpse in close custody, until all their demands have been fairly met. Now, I deem it quite possible for anybody to be actuated with right feel ings,.even supposing him to be possessed of a plethora of wealth, if he fail to dis charge the pecuniary obligations of his once dearest friend, but I hold him in horror, who could even secretly covet, let alone rudely disturb, or. carry away the few buckets.of dirt, with which a grave baL been filled. I have been led to these reflections from viewing a lonely grave, situate in the rear of...

PERJURY. [Newspaper Article] — The McIvor Times and Rodney Advertiser — 9 October 1863

PERJURY. (FstoM THE BENDIOO ADVERTISER.) James M'Kee, a respectable looking man, was charged with committing wilful and corrupt perjury, at Redcastle, on the 12th August last, in a case which was tried at the Police Court there, and in which M'Kee swore that Clark had struck him on the head. Clark denies having done so, and hence the present action. Mr. Aspinall, instructed by M'Kean, of Melbourne, appeared for the defendant. Templeton Bunnett, Clerk of Petty Sessions at Redcastle, produced the records of the Police Court, which showed that on the 12th August there was an entry of a case, "WWm. Clark v. M'Kee," for as. sault, and damages were laid at £20. The case was postponed on complainant paying 20s. costs, and when it again came on for trial, M'Kee was fined 20s. and costs. M'Kee was sworn in the usual manner. The date of the assault was the 24th July. M'Kee stated that on that date. Clark struck him on the head, which raised a lump there that remained some days. William Clark,...
