Cultivation of Vines and Olives* The Miiiistor for Agriculture (Mr. Sydney Smith) is arranging to securo from the vineyards of Messrs. Thomas Hardy and Sons, Adelaide, some cuttings of tho best vines for ivinos, raisin and currant making, and tabl a grapes. From tho orchard of Sir Samuel Davenport of Beaumont, South Australasia, a number of truncheons and cuttings of several varieties of olive trees have also beert ordered, and it is expected that they wlff arrive at Sydnoy dery shortly. With * view to determining the localities best suited to the cultivation of those plants — and in the caso of the olives which varieties produce in thftir fruit tho lar gest percentage of oil — the Minister has decided to issue tho cuttings in small lots to persons willing to conduct experiments for the department, and application for the cuttings should now be made to the Director of Agriculture' Some of the plants will also bo tried in due time at the Haivkesbury Agricultural College Farm and othe...

The above formed the subject of a very interesting and instructive lecture given .in the Presbyterian Church, Nowra, on Tuesday evening last by the well-known and eloquent lecturer, Rev. J. W. Inglis, of Parramatta. The Novrra Tovm Lighting Question A meeting of the committee appointed to inquire into and report upon the best means of lighting the town of Nowra— by gas or other illuminant — was held at the Public Rail on Tuesday afternoon last, the Mayor (Mr. Robert Patterson) presiding. Trie hon. Secretary, Mr. Jo tin KL'Arthur, read the minutes of last meeting which were duly confirmed. A letter was received from Mr. W. Montagu Coward in explanation of his tender, which was again road. Another tender was read from Mr. Monk, agent for Laidlaw and Co., of Glasgow. Both wero pretty equal iu their terras for supplying a gas plant, but there wero soniedifferences in details which have yet to be more seriously considered.
