The Duties of a Governor. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

The Duties of a Governor. The Governor of a colony independently of the vast influence he may exercise on the happiness and tranquillity of- its in- habitants by his personal disposition and deportment, has higher and more important duties to discharge. As the representa- tive of his sovereign, he is not only called upon to receive and secure the vicarious allegiance of the colonists, but he is bound to return, in the same capacity, that care and protection by which such allegiance is earned. He stands in the place of his Queen, to watch over the interests of the detached territories intrusted to his care. " and not only to guard its frontiers and in- sure its security, but to regulate its exter- nal and internal life by the ablest applica- tion of judgment and discretion. As his authority is more absolute and less limited than that of the sovereign whom he repre- sents, so is his duty more arduous, ano: his responsibility more severe. He is the champion oí his quasi-subjects, and i...

Mr. Parker's Letters to the Colonial Secretary. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

Mr. Parker's Letters to the Colonial Secretary. Sir,-The evils arising from the insuffi- ciency of labor, are daily becoming most alarming. Many have taken upon them- selves to tell the farmer's " tale of trouble," and each has given it in his own light and opinions of the subject, but for years the farmers have had no opportunity of making known their real condition, and in very few instances has their condition been properly noticed and represented by others. The difficulties which the farmers have long had to contend with, are known only to the farmer. The extreme want of labor in the agricultural districts, is an oppres- sion the farmers have so long borne, that its consequent evils have become almost habitual; hence the opinions that "the community is an idle body of people ; the farmers the most indolent, neither growing corn or producing fat stock ; growing bad wool and having it badly got up ; and not supplying the market with the common and general produce of farms." It is ...

Miscellanea. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

Miscellanea* Glass for WAEM Climates.-The glass for the new Palm house at Kew, has been submitted to Mr. K. Hunt, to find a colour which should admit light, an<? exclude the heat rays which bcorch. Mr. Hunt says : -The glass thus chosen is of a very pale Îellow-green colour, the colour being given ¡y oxide of copper, and is so transparent that scarcely any light is intercepted. In examining the spectral rays through it, it ¡ is found that the yellow is slightly dimi- nished in intensity, and that the extent of | the-redrayis affected ina small degree, ' the tower edge of the ordinary red ray being cut off by it. It does not appear to j act i.i any way upon the chemical princi- ' pie, as spectral impressions obtained upon ? chloride of silver are the same in extent , and character as those procured by the t action of the rays which have passed ordi- nary white glass. This glass has, however, a very remarkable action upon the non- ¡ luminous heat-rays, the least refrangible...

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1848. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox populi, vox Dei." SATUrKÂ^OOTO^rÎÏ 1848. A correspondent has suggested to us, that it would be desirable that some particular exposition should be given, for the better information of the public, of His Excel- lency's proposition to introduce into the colony three hundred convicts with their wives and families, some apprehension existing that by this measure, we shall reap all the evils of a convict settlement, without receiving the concomitant benefits of a large Government expenditure de- frayed by the Home authorities. His Excellency's proposal is, that a num- ber of Pentonville exiles (say three hund- red) with their wives and families shall be - sent for, the passage money of whom is to be gradually deducted from their wages, and the amount thus collected is to be ap plied in the introduction of a correspond- ing number, of free emigrants. Opposed as we even have been and still are to the indiscriminate introduction of convicts, we do not view His...

Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

Local Intelligence. We are happy to announce that the sub- scription towards the improvement of the < navigation of the river at the Hats, pro- gresses as favorably as can be expected. An opinion very generally prevails, that the best plan to effectually secure a free navigation, would be to cut an entirely new canal, commencing at the bottom of Mr. Gibb's garden and passing westward of the Powder-magazine, thus avoiding the flats altogether. This line along its whole length would be cut through a bed of clay and iron-stone, which would maintain firm banks, and the level of the water in the river being nearly if not quite the same at both extremities, no lock would be re- quired. The amount which would be ne- cessary to carry out this proposal, would probably be more than the Government could appropriate towards it, but this dif- ficulty is met with a proposition to con- tract a loan for the purpose, to be secured upon a toll to be levied upon the craft using the canal, o...

The Marine "Bunyip." [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 14 October 1848

The Marine "Bunyip." Some months since, we extracted from the Port Philip journals, several accounts illustrative of a mysterious animal supposed to inhabit the lakes of that part of Aus- tralia, but a specimen of which had not been obtained, notwithstanding it had been seen by several individuals. Although at the time it was generally supposed that it was a mere " creature of the imagination," parties were constantly on the watch to endeavor to solve so interesting a question as the existence or non existence of an undescribed animal, inhabiting the waters of Australia. It would appear from the following, taken from a late number of the Geelong Advertiser, that it is an animal belonging to the seal family. "This creature, which was shot a few days ago at William's Town, is now exhi- biting in Geelong. We have of course seen it, and like all the rest who have done so, do not know what to call it, although there can be no doubt of its belonging to the seal family. Its length from muz...

Local Intelligence. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 21 October 1848

Local Intelligence. The brig Maggie was to have gone to sea on Wednesday last, but unfortunately on their attempting to get under weigh, the cable snapped, and from the time ta- ken up in sweeping for the anchor and chain, it became too late to sail. On the following morning preparations for sailing were again made, ana again the cable parted, and happily the anchor was once more recovered, and the vessel got out of harbor. It is a matter of much surprise, this vessel so wretchedly found, ever escaped becom- ing a total wreck in our roadstead ; should such a circumstance have unfortunately happened, it would of course have been attributed to the bad qualities of her an- choring ground, whereas, as in almost every other case of wreck at Fremantle, it would have been entirely owing to the worthless ness of the gear with which she was fitted, her cable having snapped no less than four times since she first cast anchor. We are not aware whether the brig was insured or not, but if so no ...
