Co P. A. Mulgrabe, Esq., D. M. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 26 September 1835

To P A Mulgrave, Esq. P.M.   Honored Sir,— I am sorry to trouble you, but really am compelled to do as, in respect to my peti- lion, which was forwarded to you on Monday, the 14th instant, which, I suppose, must have escaped your notice. Sir, I can assure you, I am in great distress ; I must have starved, was it not for the kindness of my fellow inmates, giving me a small portion of victuals. Twelve days has now past since I sent in my petition —and I also waited five days before I could get any Magistrate to come to take my affidavit, and now I cannot get any satisfactory answer.— I am, Sir, your humble servant. A Prisoner for Debt, Launceston Gaol, September 25, 1835. [We are convinced, that Mr. Mulgrave would not wantonly permit a fellow-creature to starve. Surely, the above matter must have slipped his memory.— Ed]

PORT PHILLIP. [Newspaper Article] — The Cornwall Chronicle — 26 September 1835

PORT PHILLIP. In the True Colonist Colonist of last week appears an extract of a letter from Launceston, upon the subject of the Settlement, or rather talked of settlement in the vicinity of Port Phillip. The reader— on this side— will easily judge from whose pen it has proceeded— here— the matter through- out has been treated, as it deserves to be, with ridicule. The idea is absurd, that a person de- void of every quality that is requisite io form the character of a Ruler— without property— without the slighest pretentions to exercise authority over others--without any claim to the land he chooses to call his own— should attempt to make himself conspicuous— and still more ridiculous and unaccountable is it, that such a man should find dues. By what title has this self-styled King possessed his half million of acres of land on the South Coast of New Holland, extending from Wilsons Promontary to Port Phillip ! Does he hold it by purchase from the British Government whose land it is ?...
