THE LATE SCANDAL. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 21 January 1870

THE LATE SCANDAL, To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. Sir,- Having heard that Mr Hector Norman Simson has on more than one occasion lately   stated in the most public manner that I had written to Messrs McCulloch and Sellar com-   plaining of his management on the Tatong   Station, and I understand he even went so far as to   state that he would produce my letter on the subject. In answer to this I wish to state most distinctly and emphatically that I have never either directly or indirectly written a single word to these gentlemen on any such matter, and that the whole of Mr Simson's statement from begin- ning to end is a tissue of falsehood. I am, Sir, yours truly, GEO. SHARPE.     Benalla, January 18, 1870.

I SHOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 21 January 1870

I SHOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW. There ar some very funny things   Before the public now. Things that in any other place Would cause a dreadful row!   I must ask some funny queries   Respecting friend and foe, Will anybody answer them? I should really like to know!   Is it true that Sharpe wrote down to town Backbiting Norman hold,   And that Norman's got the letter, As we have all been told?   If so it was a dirty trick, And savours of the low, If not—why does not Sharpe reply? I should really like to know!       Is it true that Gluepot lane is changed. Into the "Milky Way,"     Since Robert Roe, of Roe's Park, rose That very rosey say   (Or rather agitation Before election day)?         Is it true that Roe, of Roe's Park, Rose up and tore his hair At being made a steward &amp...

THE LATE SCANDAL. To the Editor of the Benalla Ensign. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 28 January 1870

THE LATE SCANDAL. :. To the Editor of the "Benala EnsigQni Sir,-In your issue of the 21st lost. appears a letter from Mr George Sharpe. In answer. to that I state that whatever Mr Sharpe may have heard, I did not state"that he had written to Messrs Ma Culloch, Sellar, and Co.' ;?or did I state" that'I uduld produae his letter on the eubject."' Whit 'happened was simply this-I was told by a person (who heard it read in the office) that some one had written from Benalie to my friends abusing me .in .a very scMrrilous manner, and that from his reololeotion--of the name it was Clarke, Sharpe, Spirkor some:name like it, but not knowing any of the people in the district he could: not give. the exact name; at the same time expressing his soqprise that I had not been informed of it. Being .naturally excited at hearing of such a diabolical attempt to injure me; and having 'experienced so much persecution from Mr Shar?e in public matters, and not holding him in high respect or esteem, I at on...

AGRICULTURE, &c. [Newspaper Article] — The Benalla Ensign and Farmer's and Squatter's Journal — 28 January 1870

SAGRIOULTURE, h&C (Fose "mTa lEcoNousaT.").. There is but fittle alteration in the bradestufs' market, the :dimand for flour being almost con fined to tirde demands. A. small lot has been sold at £19 S3 6d. It is not usual that holders complain of having too much ard too strong a growth of green stuf, but, in ma?y lntan?es this year the crops sown for the purpose of being ploughed In for manure have made such rapid progress that they are ready to be buried before the owner is prepared to do it. In' such cases a slight error in judg. ment has been exercised, for it would have been betterelther' to have fed; off at an early stage or have ploughed in when the crop was about 18 inches high. When the plants are higher than this it is somewhat difficult to cover them neatly, and the only way we know of is to hang a short heavy chain under the beam of the plough, of sufficient length and weight to press all growing plants well into the furrow, but got so long as to permit the turni...

MANSFIELD. j " Faom rnE ý'INDsEPNDERT.f On Tuesday last, about mid.day, we wit nessed:from 'Mansfieldsa most singular coinci dence.o Shortly after hearing the rumbling of distant' thunder from the direction of Hell's Hole, we observed a fire, probably. due to lightning, suddenly break out on the ranges in theo .neighbourhood of that 'uphoniously named locality, and in less than .10 minutes afterwards we distinctly saw a heavy shower of rain descend directly over the a nflagration, which appeared very shortly to be nearly if not altogether extinguished. It will be encouraging to those who take an interest in our agricultural progress to,be informed of the fact, that subsidy, to the amount of £94 has been passed for.payment to the Mansfield Agricultural Society by the Government. This will be a welcome and much needed aid to the funds of the associa tion, especially as some of last year's prizes we have heard still remain dud to certain of the (now. about to be) fortunate competitors....
