W.P.O. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 9 October 1903

W.P.O. A meeting of the Cooran, Poinona, and district was held in the Pomona school on Satnr- ? day night, when Air. G. Rv land, M.L.A., bv invitation, gave a lucid explanation of the Labour paity's proposed land tax. He explained that a better idea of the tax would be conveyed by substituting the name of a ' rent tax,' for in reality it was -a rent tax. It would touch the owners of valuable property in towns, and this he thought was only fair and equitable; as such value was not brought about by the owner's industry or labour, but b}r the industry and labour of society and the ex penditure of public money. An average farm valued at ^800 was instanced, and it was shown that at the rate of id. i in the £ the tax payable on j this would be 8s. 4d. a year. Thiswas easily explained. The first ,£300 is exempt, and the j improvements on the farm are, j say on an average, worth .£400. j This leaves ;£ 100 which is liab...
