"PERMISKUS PARS." [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 13 March 1896

"PERMISKUS PARS." --49- S (Bi. RosvJ.) Says 2imothleus in the Argus "The bulk of the Government wants prohibi-: tory duties at the Customs, the loss of revenue to .be made ,up by aland.tsx. The.rejection of the -Jand tax is popular with the cotntry, which sees that but for the Council the land would have been burdened, and the moneyall have been spent.'" Of course the writer implies that this policy would have the effect of rfelievingthe city:dwelldr froin tixation, at the expunse of the rural poisulation. In reality, tldie land tax revenue cwould be derived mainly froin property owners of the Council description, and an effective protective tariff would affect Flinders Lane far more nearly than the farmners, and as 'for ih·eoiotention that ."all the nioney would have beeen spect," plray for what else does the State require money except to spend it or , pay off -principl and interest of foreign loans ? Anyhow, depreciatory criticism from the party Timoteeus represents is both pueril...

THE COMING WINTER. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 13 March 1896

THE COalMNG WINTER. Is a month or so the long, dry days of the sumnmer season, and its sleepless and sweltering nights will have given place to the dull and rainy diurnal periods, and the protracted cold evenings of the winter solstice; and helmets-and dte rs" will have been discarded for topcoats and umbrellas. To people of strong constitutions who can always obtain fuel, food, and shelter, together with season able clothing, the months of May, June, and July do not mean any special dis comfort-mrather we should think they would be hailed as a relief after the "heat waves" of January and February; the scorching and searching north winds; and the intolerable nuisances of perspi ration and dust. To the poor, however, who-arouch in their-w~rchedeleskyn ne mente, during theldrivingrains_and pitiless north-westerly gales, and who feel the pinch of hunger, beside a cold, bleak hearth, the outlook is very differ ent. Unless a man is working hard, the minimum of meat food, and an occasiona...
