WAGGA WAGGA VERSUS GUNDAGAI. [Newspaper Article] — Wagga Wagga Express and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 21 May 1859

"TVAGGA WAGGA PT'E?SUS GUDI)AGAr. SEVEN cities, says an old Greek chronicler, contended for the honour of Hoxan's nativity; but, as no pro vision was made for the registration of births, deaths, and marriages in the administrative systems of the Ionian commonwealths, this interesting qucs tion can only be determined by an' impartial balancing of probabilities, and a careful investigation of the ante cedents and habits of the glorious old blind bard. [FROM OUR CORRIESPONDENT.] After a few months droughit,'thin part of the country has this week been favoured with some most providential rains, which have done an immensity of good, and taken a load of care off the minds of the settlers, as the runs were previouly in a verybarren dried up state, and a much longer continuance of dryweather would have caused great distress and much loss of property. A g~entliemanr: of the medical pofessioni, Dr. Echlles has just taken up his residelice amongst us, having come, as it is understood, at the solicitation of soveial osttlers, Wh? have guaranteed him a sum of £300 during the flcrat year. (1.p~itone. of A? eWu..-". :.to~ I1E~~u . .• THE arrival of the Benaies with the March. : mails, brings very little additional news. The report of Lord Derby's resignation is not confirmed; the new Reform Bill was intro duced on the 28th of February, and appears to havo excited a determined opposition both in and out of Parliament. Lord John Russell has given notice of a resolution condemnatory of the Bill, which ho will move at its second reading, fixed for the 21st of March. Meet ings are being held throughout the country, protesting aeainst the measure, and in some cases demanding the dismissal of Ministers. Tum Woor, SAL.S have proceeded quietly ; they opened at firmer prices, and continued with very little change to the close. The. first sale of this month commenced on the 24th February, the number of bales beinssg? 32,666; prices in the average, as compared.l with last sales, nmay be quoted thus Sydney, good to fine ?d. to Id. advance; Port Philli : good to superior id. to 1id...
