The Kerang Times AND SWAN HILL GAZETTE. PUBLISHED WEEKLY. KERANG, FEBRUARY 22, 1878. THE WAR. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 22 February 1878

AND SwA.N HILL GAZETTE. PUBLISHED WEEKLT. KERANG, FEBRUARY 22, I878. THE WAR. Is our last issue we published a telegram from our Sandhurst corres pondent stating that war had been formally declared between England and Russia. Since then. we have ascer tained that though war at the time was considered imminent, yet it had not: been actually declared. Later tele grams assure us that matters are as-: suming a more pacific character. The British fleet proceeded to Constanti nople in spite of the refusal by the Porte to grant a firman. The Russians, I despite those threats of Prince Gortso chakoff, that their army would occupy Constantinople, have retired from it. A telegram from London, dated the 18th inst., states that thle Russians simply hold a redoubt within the lines of Constantinople; Chile another message, dated a day later, states that the redoubt has been evacuated by the Russians. This action no doubt has been the result of the more decided stand taken by Britain within these ...

"A LITTLE LAND WELL TILLED." [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 1 March 1878

"A LLTITE, lAND WAI:l TllIEl." There is no better preveotive of.or relnedv for, ordina.ry human troubles tlhan the one indicated by this quoted line. .A farmer who is a good manager-who does not let his work drive him-can, and does enjoy more, both physically and mentally, than ijany other class of men. The horrors of fear, care, lenvy, V ambition and temllptation, scarcely come near him. lie is surrounded by plants, trees, fields, birds, animals and rc:ks the great hook of s1nature opens page after page, nllore than his whole lifetime would suffice for examining, and enough to give each day a fresh interest and a fresh wrinkle. T'he farmer who loves to cultivate his mind as well is his field and his foals, becomes the most practically learned of mien. There is scarcely a science that does not contribute directly to his practice and his needs. lie is not much a man of " words." HOGS IN ORCHARD. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 1 March 1878

I HOGS IN OR HIIARTD. My experience is decidedly to put the plough and harrow through the orchard as early as the ground is fit again in .lune turnl under the weeds. While the orchard is yotung plant to potatoes or corn, or when older crops can be raised, sow to oats, and let the hogs harvest them; not fifty hogs to an acre, for that turns the orchard into a hog yard. I never said make a hog yard of the orchard --mIt 5 hogs to the acre makes it a hog pasture. I have pastured my orchards with hogs for many years, anli have not knowrn but one tree injured by them, and that stood where we daily threw corn to the hogs, and when I saw that the ground was hogged too heavy I threwsonime dry Osage bruash round it, and the tree is doing well and bearing bountifully. The limbs of my old orchards are a littie too low, and whetn I plough I can't get so near the tree as I would like to, leaving a square patch of grass. Well, the hogs have given mellow cultivation toat least 1.I00out of :000 tree...

SELECT POETRY. HAPPY RAIN. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 1 March 1878

SELECT POETRY. IIAPPY RAIN. Is the rain neverpleasant to you ? Does its melody fall on your ear As it drips, drips down, the whole night through, With its tinklings so soft and clear ? Does it waken no memorits sweet Of the days that are over for aye, When the blossoms of joy blo3,a:d bright at your feet, And the clouds never darkened your sky ? Does it waken no hope fresh and fair, That will gild all your future with light ? Do-e it lift from your bouom no loadstone of care, As you hear its soft pattor at night ? Does it bring in its magical train No tone of a loved one that's gone, Till you almost forget 'ti5 the voice of tile rain Wh1c1 will cease with tlhe i'rcaking of dawn ? And you reach out your arms in tihe gloom To embracc the dlar form as of yore, 1orgetful of suffering, of death and the tomb, As you whisper, " We're parted no imre." Oh, the rain ! the molodious rainl ! The rain with its balmu for all woJ! I would every heart thait is bleeding with pain lts tender revealin...
