SKETCHES OP AUSTRALIAN ZOOLOGY. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 1 July 1856

SKETCHES OF AUSTRALIAN ZOOLOGY. (From the S. M. Herald.) The carnivorous and insectivorous marsupials come first in the classification of a celebrated anato- mist, whose groups, founded on certain modifica- tions of the digestive organs, are singularly in accordance with the habits of the animals in ques- tion. This is one of the many proofs, if such be   required, of the futility of trusting entirely to characters derived from dried skins and skulls, as has been practised by many a systematist who had no other materials at his command. First on the list comes the Thylacinus, a singular, dog-like, pouched creature, well known in Tasmania as the tiger or hyaena, names indicative of its ferocity and the striped markings on its body. It is as large as the dingo, so powerful that dogs will not always attack it, and very destructive to sheep and poultry. Closely allied to the last, and likewise peculiar to Tasmania, is the native devil of the settlers, a short-limbed. powerf...

The special class who were invited to attend this gathering are, from 'rcftson which may be rcadilv concoi ven, of a somewhat shy And retiring character. PUNCH. [Newspaper Article] — The North Australian, Ipswich and General Advertiser — 8 July 1856

PUNCH. A Female Fokctiokaet.— The Master of the Rolls hns. it is said, appointed a female to a clerkship in the State Paper Office. We do not vouch for the tnuth of the statement {which is copied from the Spectator), but we see no objection to fimhle clerks. who will, at ail events, be sure to have someti.ing to say, and will be free from that offensive taciturnity which' is often the most irritating attribute of official nndlings. We rather tremble, however, at the idea of a female in the State Paper Office, for we know what an awful propensity most women have to put papers to rights, and the inextricable confusion into which papers are generally thrown by the process. Perhaps, however, the State Papers are not intended for reference, and am. most of them are possibly mere ?waste paper by this time, a female hand may be very. useful in cramming them i' to all sorts of holes and corners, where they will be quite out of everybody's way. and utterly inaccessible.
