BUILDERS' LABORERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 February 1914

BUILDERS' LABORERS. It would appear that the delegates representing the N.S.W. Master Builders Association and the N.S.W. Builders Laborers' Union deserve the con gratulations of their respective bodies, and we might say,- the public generally, for the manner in which they approached the recent crisis. Perhaps it was that the public got a wrong conception of the position by the inflammatory and injudicious para graphs in the daily press, which is always denounc ing strikes, but does a great deal by sensation mon gering to promote them. Perhaps, we say, the position was not as ugly as it was represented in the cress. However, it is satisfactory to now know that the Union has fallen in with the sensible view of settling the matter in dispute by constitutional methods. Both sides naturally believe in their respective sides to the argument. Each also believes it has the better case, or, at least, a good case. Then why the necessity for any preliminary trouble? Strike never yet Avon an a...

WAGES LOST IN BEAUFORT STRIKE. During the nineteen weeks' strike of the miners at Beaufort it is estimated that the strikers lost £12,000 in wages. It will be some time yet before the mines are again sufficiently opened up to require their full complement. of workmen.

Architects, Builders and Engineers THE LATE COLONEL VERNON. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 February 1914

Architects, Builders and Engineers THE LATE COLONEL VERNON. Judge Backhouse presided at a preliminary meeting of friends 'of the late Colonel Vernon, convened by our Editor, and held recently in the Sydney Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss means of keeping alive the memory of the deceased gentleman. It was explained that in life the Colonel was associated with architecture, construction generally and the military, while as a. private- citizen he was held in the highest esteem. In each of those circles movements of .per petuating his memory were mooted. It was, however, suggested to our Editor by many mutual friends that he should consolidate the movement into one grand and laudable effort. Hence Friday's meeting. After the subject had been discussed, it was agreed to request the Lord Mayor to call a public meeting to forward the move ment. ' Mr. G. A. Taylor was appointed Hon. Secretary and Treasurer. Subscriptions should be forwarded to the. Hon. Treasurer, G. A....

GONDOLAS AND QUORUMS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 February 1914

GONDOLAS AND QUORUMS. .We have all heard of the alderman who opposed the purchase of more than two gondolas for the local lake, on the economic principle that in view of the recently-risen rate it would be wiser policy to breed them. A Queensland correspondent, how ever, goes one better. He pictures the Mayor addressing the council : — 'Gentlemen, it will be impossible for us to tran sact any business to-day,, because of lack of a quorum.' ? 'Mr. Mayor,' said the new member rising quickly, 'I have been elected on a pledge to my constituency that I shall work untiringly and un ceasingly for the upbuilding and uplifting of our town, and I now and here move that a committee be appointed to consider the immediate purchase of as good a quorum as the market affords, and that i he committee be instructed to secure the quorum and have it properly installed by the next meeting. 'And furthermore,' he said, with a fine patriotic touch, 'let us obtain a good Australian quorum, and not one of th...

are the only things that Count in Business as in everything else. Business is a battle and Advertising is often 'pot-shotting' at long range. The main endeavor is to win the best attention of those with whom you want to do business. Concentrate Your Fire ! You will find in and Real Estate Magazine many great firms who have been firing waste shots in other publications, but are now con centrating their fire through our columns, be cause they know that through ' Building' they can get right on the spot without any waste. Messrs. F. R. Robinson & Sons proved this when they said, when renewing their contract for advertising their famous bath heaters and N orris' fireplaces, etc., that they are now prac tically confining their advertising to 'Building.' They had tried other papers, including the dally papers, without tracing any commensurate results. Take advantage of the ' Range Finders/' Many of the great firms in 'Building' have been range finding for you. You can save much wa...

THE EMPLOYER COMBATING UNIONISM. The Only Way. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 9 February 1914

THE EMPLOYER COMBATING UNIONISM. The Only Way. . Organised attack is the best defence, and the only means of combating organ ised workers on the offensive, is to meet them in like manner. N.S.W. Minister Griffith has openly ? admitted that nationalisation will not remove the ever present . possibility of ' industrial disruption. We need but recall the Sydney tram strike and the Victorian railway strike, to realise that the remedy is not in Government monopoly of trade and commerce. The unions have, to-day, an organisa tion that is worthy of their cause, as fur ther proved by the sittings of the Inter State Labor Conference, at Adelaide. Some of the decisions of that meeting, amounting to a quelling of the offensive attitude of trades unionism, were appar ently based on experience gained through years of organisation, and are solely to help them in their own cause— the cause of the employee. They mostly refer to the financing, by other unions, of unions out on strike, but. ! one moti...
