CHESS PROPOSED CLUB AT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 August 1926

CHESS PROPOSED CLUB AT CANBERRA. Canberra's chess players think that the capi tal will not be complete without a Chess Club; the chess board is to them a brain-training ground of great educational value, the develop ment of the reasoning faculties being con sidered by them to be one of the great , needs of the age. Every capital city in the world 4ias its Chess Club, and it seems that Canberra, though original in its lay-out and architectural fea tures, should not be above copying other capi tals where it is wise to do so. International and inter-State cricket and football will be played iii the Territory, and why not international chess tournaments too? it is thought Time has now given the cor rect signal for the club's formation, and a meeting has been called for the 17th August, at 8 p.m., at the Social Service Building, Acton, to see whether there are enough players _ of the champion indoor game in Canberra, and enough energy and enthusiasm in the players to organise and run the...
