Beware of Fire. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 2 December 1905

Beware of Fire. The appalling losses by fire re ported almost daily throughout this State, and in a lesser degree in other States, calls for prompt and serious thought on the part of the Govern ment anil all responsible olucei-s under its control. In the northern and north-western portions of New South Wales, people who have been heroically struggling against the ravages of drought for years until brought to the verge of bankruptcy and absolute ruin, have had every blade of grass swept away in a few hours by the devastating bushfirc and in many instances houses, fences, and even stock have gone down before the irresistible /James. This is a deplorable catastrophe and a national disaster, while nothing but the most heartfelt sympathy can bo felt for the individual suf ferers, who are left in many in stances in a ruined 'and heart broken condition. The people on the South Coast who have not a personal knowledge of the groat grazing bolts of the western and other inland portions of thi...

Candelo Oddfellows' Sports. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 2 December 1905

Candelo Oddfellows' Sports. Akteu two postponements (lie above fixture caino off on Wednesdiiy. The running was interesting, )-n( tlie nl'tundiiucc was not so good as the efforts of the management de served. Tho postponements re ferred to no doubt had much to do with this regrettable result. The Piimbula band, which was engaged for the occasion, played throughout (ho clay, and added' much to the day's enjoyment. Mr. II. McGrndc acted as starter, and the committee was fortunate in having secured the services of such a good man. He got his fields away to an even go every time. Messrs. II. P. Col lins and D. Williams had charge of the worsted, and although they had some close finishes to decide they made no mistake. A very inte rested and disappointed spectator took exception to the award* in the final of the 'big money,' but judges have nothing to do with the financial interests of punters, but are there on behalf of all interested. There was no booth on the ground. Mr. Fraser had pai...

A PASTORAL LETTER As the result oi a private con ference, the Archbishops and Bishops of the Anglican Church the Commonwealth have issued, to to the Church a pastoral letter on mutters affecting the well-being of the neonle us a, whole. Several im portant questions have, been selec ted from a number which presented themselves, and on these the pre lates have made a combined decla ration. Following are some of the matters dealt with : — BETTING AND GAMBLING. The association of betting and gambling with our sports and pas times has now become a great and crying evil. We do not forget, and wo deeply deplore, the evil of reck less financial speculation, as it af fects our business concerns ; but we address ourselves to the social side of the national life us the .side more recently affected, and that from which we hope for the most immediate reform. Without discussing the question of the essential immorality of bet ting and gambling, we would di rect attention to the obvious and undenia...
