The idea was conceived by Mr. Gould (writes the New York 'limes) and w:.s carried out with extraordinary nern e, persiste,,cy, and adroitness. The scheme iwas of such colossal proportions that even the reckless diaring of James Fisk, jour., upon it. Gould aimed at a profit of lifty miillions or imore. In M:arch, 1869, the price of go'd touched 130-, which was the lowest figure: that it had reached in three years. Jay Gonul, as president of the Erie Railway arid the principal owner of the Tenth National Bank, had the conmmand of large sums of monnev.
