In Memoriam. THE LATE MR. LOUIS PULVER. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 12 November 1897

[?] THE LATE MR. LOUIS PULVER. ' My first and principal duty is to make my pupils good ; to instil knowledge comes next.' These words need never have been uttered, yet all who came into contact with Louis Pulver recognised that the guiding rule of his life iound expression in this pregnant utter ance. Goodness is knowledge, Goodness u Wisdom and Goodness is the fruit that grows only on the Tree of Love. Love of God, Love of parents and teachers, love of fellow-creatures —the cultivation of a Spirit of Love was his -constant occupation. By lessons deduced from Scripture, from Nature, from our daily lives, the means were always at hand and never-faiL ing. And from what did his pupils learn the great lesson best and readiest ? From himself ; his own personality ; from the love which the youngest among them saw and felt radiating from him and warming and refreshing and invig orating all around him,— pupils and teachers :alike. They caught it from him— it infected them This electric curr...

The Secret of Life. ( Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 12 November 1897

The Secret of Life, ( Continued. ) All this serves only to bring out into greater prominence the fullness and capacity of our own; spiritual life. If to the physicist, Life in material things is the form which energy as sumes, and which is utterly inexplicable with only the forces of dead matter, then Life in things immaterial must be vastly more complex and capable of results from their own energy quite beyond our ordinary powers of com ?nnt.fl.tiifm. 'With such convictions of Life, it is no wonder that great things should bo expected . of creatures so endowed. There is no oligarchy of men upon whom this endowment is bestowed. Life is given to all men liberally. Doubtless, there may be to some a more liberal gift than to others. Yet, just as surely, the larger results that flow from some men's lives is not because of greater gifts, but of more diligent employment of their gifts. The same reasoning may safely enough be . applied to the endowments which enable the souls of men to acc...

Should Seats Be Free ? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 12 November 1897

Should Seats Be Free? A question that is continually mooted in the papers devoted to religion, and one which at once demands : attention is, | ' How shall we advance and perpetuate our religion ?' That is a vital import to us. It is a self-evident fact that interest in our religion, is percep tibly on the wane, if the attendance on the weekly Sabbath services be taken as a criterion. This is a distressing yet uudeniable condition of affairs, which, if anowea to continuej will find the Jewish religion beyond resurrection one hundred years hence. In this age of progress, figuratively speaking, religion, like everything else, must keep apace with the times. The orthodox services to-day are identical with those of decades past, and the reformed church has taken but one step in advance. There was an objective point in view when this reform movement was instituted— to create more interest, and to insure larger attendance on the services There has been no radical change; and while this mov...
