NOTES FOR THE NOVICE [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 16 December 1916

NOTES FOR THE NOVICE SThe suburban backyard poultry, keeper should see to it that the fowls don't become too fat. This danger is always present, because, as a general thing, in the suburban backyard, the space given over for the birds is small, "and the- ordinary suburban keeper is apt to keep too many for its carrying capacity. Then there are the addition al facts that, as a rule, the yards are bare of scratching litter, and the fowls are overfed. ' Protrusion of the oviduct, or egg pas. sage, is. occasionally met with in the poultry yard, and usually with old, over fat hens. It is caused by the straining to pass large eggs. The or. gan should be washed with warm water, dressed. with olive oil, and with the finger gently returned, keeping the hen's head down in order to facilitate the return of the protruding part. When .the egg sack.is split it is difficult ie effect a cure, and it is usually the best to kill the bird., When musty eggs are laid the usual cause is rank, strong-flav...

THE POULTRY RUN. THE HOUDAN. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 16 December 1916

THI POULTRY RUN. THE HOUDAN. The Houdan is undoubtedly a good Sid breed, or to put it more correctly, Ithe old breed of Houdan is good. The aew type of the breed has suffered somewhat in utility qualities through ibeing bred to show standard. The huge -crest demanded by those who breed i-oudans for the show bench shows its Si-effects on the birds by compelling t them to move in an uncertain manner when foraging for food on the range, indicating nervousness. The birds, too, - arqi indifferent layers owing to the enor mnous headgear' robbing them of the ]foraging instinct. Still, as much as it Shas been victimised to satisfy the eye ref the" poultry judge, it still retains Smany utility qualities-a thing that can. riot be said of many breeds for whici/ ishow standards are set up. But no one 'uneed look to the exhibition side of the 'Houdan if one desires to possess birds ;of good laying capacity, for all the old timers are not quite extinct, and as a useful all-round pure breed they a...
