Our Gaols. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 5 November 1886

Onr Gaols. A return, which was moved for by Mr. Kidd, on the 26th August last, has been printed by order of the Legis- . lative Assembly, showing approximately the industrial skill or proficiency in knowledge a useful money-earning trade of all inmates in the gaols of tbe colony. From this document it appears that the total number' of male prisoners in gaol — presumably on the date above mentioned — was 2057, of whom 139 were under, and 1918 were over, 20 years of age. Of these, 518 — of whom nine, were under 20 — had a sufficient knowledge of a bona fide profession, trade, handicraft, or usefnl money-earning industry, requiring trainiag previous ,to its exercise, to justify being elased as proficients. Two hundred and ninety-four are returned as having but an imperfect or moderate knowledge of such vocations, and of these 31 are under 20. The remaining 1245, of whom 97 are under 20, had practically no knowlege of any industry requiring previous technical training to enable them to ...

The Unemployed. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 5 November 1886

The Unemployed. TnE Western Tost makes tho following caustic remark on ono section of the ' unemployed — ' Sir Patrick Jennings has mado a bold bid for popularity. He prefaced his introduction of the Loan Estimates in tho Assembly by the daring statement that they wero designed to I provide work for tlio unemployed. Sir Patrick has done a good deal in that lino sincelie came into power, but it has only been for one class of that great army, and they are a class who are always with us — the unemployed who are always to be found hanging on the outskirts of Sydney society. They are people with whom no private employer will have anything to j do ; the class who are selected for com missions in the Permanent Artillery, for junior clerkships (where neither know ledge nor ability are required), for nice cosy sinecures, and other places that will suit men whose extravagant tastes and total want of aptitude for any useful work unfit them to earn an honest living in any other way than as publ...
