Grains of Gold. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 27 February 1889

Grains of Gold. * Kind words can never die, Cherished and blessed, God knows how deep they lie Stored in tbe 'breast.' Praise undeserved is satire in disguise. Idleness is the burial of the living man. Afflictions are but the shadows of prod's wings. Difficulty Is the very school of culture «nd progress. Fidelity in trifles is the ladder which leads to greatness. Jtffctioe is every man's due, but would ruin most people. My friend, if you are happy, don't try to prove, it. He who takes the child by the hand takes the mother by the heart. This earth is not an vnmingled ball of mud ; after all, sunbeams visit it. There is sotting so strong or safe in any. emergency rof Jifo as the simple truth. Men love to hear of their power, bat have an extreme disrelish to be told of their duty. Truth is the most powerful thing in the world, since fiction can only please by its resemblance to it. The van who deserves * monument never needs one; while the man who needs one never deserves it A soul in...

Talking. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 27 February 1889

Talking. ' A still tongue shows a wise head,' is ?k capital saw, but, alas ! howfewof us follow it. 1 thought 1 liiul learned to have a still tongue years ago, but every now and then it wacs a little too much and gnu me into all sorts «fson«)os. I have always thought that if you Selt Ifcat you were right you ought to say so, and stick to it, and keep on saying it and sticking to it, but I rind it isn't the best way to get on in the world. Stick to it, if you are sure you arc right, but do less saying. Don't talk at all unless it is necessary to do so. It takes far more talent, as some one said, ' to make a good listener than it does to make a good talker.'

OUR SYDNEY LETTER. Tm atmosphere of Sydney Society at pre sent is stagnant, tbe appalling nature of the weather acting probably as a dapiper on social gaieties ai is usual at this time of year ; but the fact that impresses itself most on the ordinary observer; 5s the weekly efflux ot our wealthier residents from the land of their birth, to seek the iresh fields and pas. tures new of the mother country. life be comes a burden to the weary foot traveller ?endeavouring to escape destructien at the hands, or rather wheels, of handsome cabs as they pursue their fiery way to the res pective offices of the P. & 0., Orient, or Mes' sagerie Maritimes Companies. Training Children. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 27 February 1889

?? ' Training; Children, A very young child knows the difference between being laughed with and being laughed.at. If you laugh with a child, you give him pleasure. If you laugh at a child, you «rouse his indignation. He feels that, child as he is, he is entitled to be recognised in his personality, and to have his feelings considered with due deference. If you deny a child his rights so far, he. is likely to assert his claim on your respect, and to indicate his lack of respect for you in your practical de'uial of his rights
