THE RIBBON OF THE SUNFLOWER. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 18 June 1898

THE RIBBON OF THE SUNFpLOWER. 'Many of our readers (says the " Women . Suffrage Journal") have probably never heard of the "yellow ribbon," familiar though.we ail are with the blue ribbon and white ribbon of temperance organisations. Nevertheless, the " yellow sunflower ribbon" seems rapidly becoming as marked an em blem of a supporter of women's suffrage in the United States as the blue ribbon is of a temperance advocate amongst ourselves. The idea emanated from Kansas, where the president of the Kansas Equal Rtights Associ ation first suggested it about three years ago, and was received with enthusiasm by men and women, whether members of the association or not. In a few weeks the idea spread beyond Kansas, and was taken up by both the National and American Woman SuffrageAssociations. Already it is beginning to attract to itself those associations of ideas which give force and significance to a badge. Thus a correspondent in. Kansas writes: "Fancies have-gathered round it, as that...

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 18 June 1898

The coming dread of the Australian colonist is the apparant increase of that dreadful complaint, Hydatids. Some say that there is no cure for it, only by operation; but in my experience 1 say that the only cure is to be found by Medicine. My son I found had a small swelling on his side, although but little notice was taken of it until it int creased in size; and four (4) years afterwards we took him to two (2) doctors, who wanted at once to ope rate uipon him. I at first objectedd, but afterwards took him to the Childreu's Hospital for'operation, which was un successful. After another month he ;had to be operated on again, which was also unsuccessful. He lingered for 'bout three (3) months, getting very weak. I was then advised to take him to the Homoeopathic HIospital. The doctors there also wanted to operate upon him again; but, experiencing a 'doubt as to his recovery I thei thought that as the doctors in both hospitals 'had expressed a doubt as to my son's :recovery, I made up m...

She, unfostunately for her own, happiness as well as his, was boin with a temper like gunpowder. The follow ing little family dialogue took place between them the other morning just after breakfast, during one of her lucid intervals. It leaked out, no matter.how. :..Tell me," said he, "just for my own curiosity, how it happened that I never dis covered this unhappy weakness in you in our courtship days,'when I thought you a para gon of perfection. How did you ever manage to restrain yourself than ?" - The poor woman hesitated a few moments before answering, and then sobbing bitterly, dropped her graceful little head upon his sturdy shoulder and said: " I used to excuse myself from you for a few minutes and.g-g-go upstairs...
