THE BOV. I can see that dayj White cumuli were heaped over the w^od tops, bat the midjle day was blue imd clear. -Though I ff8s dozing on a saloon step, this day of beauty got even through my wavering ie_t Perhaps I sat there an hour, per. hips an age, in which the brinks I got ffere the recurring days. It suddenly occurred to me that such a !oDg continuance of fine weather ought to )e enjoyed, more actively. ; But the world whirls, as everybody knows. I mumbled a number of jokes on nature as I staggered abroad. After a tiresome .ourDey, I came upon an alley and a croup of boys travelling through a game of marbles on their knees like penitents gtumping through Jerusalem. And in tbeir midst was Billy. Billy! was a noble ooking boy. I paused and tried to get ' ,„to position to iook at him. I felt a maudlin pridedn Billy. He had Flora's toe eyes (kessed Flora! SMITH CURTIS, RPTTO*.,v BEAVER. 3PAr Frl_ay Morningf January 31, 1873. COMPULSORY -SJDUCJlTION. This subject, which has * been discussed in Teachers1 Institates throughout the State during the whiter, recommended to the consideration of the Legislature in the recent message of ex-Grovernor Geary, and occupied the attention of the Constitutional Convention, is of vital interest to the whole community. The idea of compulsion in education appears; to be antagonistic, to onr free way of actings and strikes one at first disagreeably, but it is the novelty of the idea that appears so, and riot the measure itself. Compulsion of children to attend upon school is common enough on the part of parents, and if all parents were faithful in this; respect there would be no difficulty in leaving the matter with them, and . trust to parental authority to attain the desired result., ,A11 agree that universal education is essential to the safety and welfare of a government such as ours.- The fundame...

The srnallness of such a number at once impresses every one | familiar with population, and shows how inadequate is the circulation of the work to meet the general demand. Not one soldier out of every hundred has been the recipient of a printed copy of the record which he assisted in making. This is neither just nor honorable; and it is now proposed that the Legislature shall order a large edition of this work, so as to popularize it by placing it in the hands of as many of the surviving soldiers of Pennsylvania as can be reached. The ster eotype plates from winch the first edition was printed are still in existence, and therefore a second edition could be issued at comparatively small cost The Legislature could well afford to or...
