j Current Events I [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 September 1907

j Current Events I SECRETARY of the Treasury Cortelyou will distribute government funds to aid the movement of crops . The plan pursued last year is to be followed , with some modifications . One of the ideas is that the government should place its funds in the banks subject to withdrawal by check . It is not expected that anything like the amount needed last year will be called for this season . If it is the treasury will be in better shape to meet the call , as under an act of the last congress customs receipts may be deposited in the banks . Under the new method the customs receipts will be used for the relief of the smaller institutions , while the larger fund will be sent to the centers of distribution . New York will , as in the past , get a large-share of the amount to be released . There is too much speculation in stocks and in grain . Speculation is just another form oi gambling . It does a great deal of harm and it does no good whatever . The energies of some of the bright...

MDairy and Live Storir [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 September 1907

MDairy and Live Storir DAIRYMEN in different states are still arrested and fined when they deliver milk that is not up to the required cream standard . Boards of healtti in some cities , however , are requiring a standard of cleanliness which is much more sensible than a standard of richness ^ Of course nobody wants to pay for milk that has been watered or skimmed , but clean skim milk is wholesome and will do no harm , while dirty milk is not only disagreeable to think about but it is absolutely dangerous . The value of clean milk is not appreciated as it should be . Doctors are very much to blame for tnis . The more cows near large cities where milk is supplied for daily consumption the less is the proportion of calves raised . , It is said that the cow population of the United States increases at the rate ot about five per cent a year . The increase in the consumption of milk in cities is about ten per cent per year . Uniform color in butter is necessary to secure a good price th...

The Grange [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 September 1907

The Grange THE Australian Department of Agriculture has for a number of years carefully investigated the value of parasites for the purpose of controlling injurious plant insects . This year seems to have settled the controversy in favor of securing all possible parasites of the most injurious insects . Still another advantage in feeding alfalfa is that the fertility , for the most part , remains on the farm . This is a valuable profit , but it is hard to estimate the value in dollars and cents . The Executive Committee of the American Association of Farmers Institute Workers have announced that the next meeting of the association will be held at Washington , D . C , October 83 to 35 , 1907 . ^^ The Twin Falls , Ida ., irrigation project is meeting with great success . The north side project has been developed first , in this section 30 , 000 acres were opened for entry on April 22 nd , . when 520 men stood in line to make entries and make their first payments on 80 or 160 acres eac...
