NAVIGATION . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 12 January 1832

NAVIGATION . Of all the arts and professions which at any time attract notice , none appear more astonishing and marvellous , than that of navigation , in the state in which it exists at present . This cannot be made more evident , than by taking a retrospective view of the small craft to which navigation owes its origin ; and comparing them to a majestic first-rate ship of war , containing 1000 men , with their provisions , drink , furniture , apparel , and other necessaries for many months , besides 1 < 0 pieces of heavy ordnance , and bearing all this vast apparatus , safely to the most distant shores . A man in health consumes , in the space of twen-ty-four hours , about eight pounds of victuals and drink ; consequently , 6000 pounds of provisions are required daily , in such a ship . Let us then suppose her to be fitted out for three months , and we shall find , that she must be ladened with 720 , 000 pounds of provisions . A large forty-two pounder weighs about 6100...

22 I > COIGBESS . FIRST SESSION . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 12 January 1832

22 I > COIGBESS . FIRST SESSION . IN SENATE . DECEMBER 19 . Mr . Clay said , that understanding a report had been made by the committee of ways and means on the subject of reducing the duties on Tea , adverse to the reduction , he rose to inquire of the chairman of that committee , whether it was intended that the report should remain on the table or be acted on . Entertaining very different views from those which he understood to be expressed in the report , he was desirous that the question of the repeal of the duty on tea should be fully and early considered by the senate . — This was due to the merchant , to the consumer , and to the important interests of the country . He would therefore ask whether il was intended that the report should , by reference to the committee of the whole , or in any other maimer , be brought before the consideration of the senate , so that there might be some general expression of the sentiments ol the whole body on the subject . Mr . Sm...

FOREMAN JIKU'S . Eionuon to the ot dd [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 12 January 1832

FOREMAN JIKUS . Eionuon to the ot dd papers evening INOV . , have been received in New York . Alarming riots occurred at Bristol after the rejection of the reform bill . The details of the destruction caused by the mob are dreadfully appalling . Forty-two dwelling and ware houses were burnt and completely destroyed , together with the mansion house , excise office , custom house , four toll houses , three prisons , and the Bishop s palace . Many lives were lost in the flames , and by violence . Fifty one persons were also severely injured . The riot commenced on Sunday morning and continued till Monday evening . A writer in describing the scene , says : Monday dawned on such a scene as had never before been witnessed in this place . The flames , it is true , had subsided , but the appearance of Queen square was appalling in the extreme . Numerous buildings were reduced to a heap of ruins , and others were momentarily falling in ; while around , in various parts , lay several rioters...

THE CONFESSION OF NAT TURNER . —Mr . T . R . Gray s pamphlet of the Confessions of Nat Turner , the leader of the late Insurrection in Southampton , has been published at Baltimore . It makes 22 pages . It professes to give , from the Bandit s own lips , the circumstances which formed him a leader and a fanatic . It sketches the commencement , progress and termination , of an insurrection , the bare recital of which makes the blood run cold . — The description of the butchery of the whites is terrific . We cannot make copious extracts from it , because it is put under a copy right . — But we may be permitted , without infringing on the author s privilege , to copy the following incidents : — And by signs in the heavens that it would make known to me when I should commence the great work—and until the first sign appeared , I should conceal it from the knowledge of men . And on the appearance of the sign , ( the eclipse of the sun last February , ) I should arise and prepare...
