The High Cost of Living to Continue [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
The High Cost of Living to Continue By ARTHUR W . PAGE ( By Courtesy of Doubleday , Page & Co ., from World s Work ) There may be a large number of subsidiary causes for the advance In the cost of living which can be eliminated by prosecuting somebody , but the main cause is fundamental and ( for a time , at least ) , continuous . We are outgrowing our food supply . Let us take meat for example . The price of meat is as high as it has been , in the memory of the oldest housekeeper . People grumbled when the advance in prices began , changed butchers as it went on , changed back as it continued , and . then the storm broke . Every newspaper ran columns about the cost of living . A great meat boycott was inaugurated in the Middle West and spread rapidly from town to town . Reforming women made speeches on street corners , and in Conr gress committees were appointed to investigate the causes of the phenomena . The papers and the public blamed the farmers , the meat trust , ...

Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
Hog Notes—By a Practical Hog Man A Word Regarding the Great Congress Berkshire Show at Des Moines , la . There probably has not been a time in the last 25 years that is of as much importance to the breeders of Berkshire swine as the coming Congress Show at Des Moines . More money will be put up for this Show than has been appropriated for any like Berkshire Show excepting possibly the World s Fair Shows . The liberal pizes offered by the Iowa State Fair as well as by the American Berkshire Recori ! Association , together with the amount raised by the Iowa Berkshire Organization , is tempting enough to draw out one of the largest and best Berkshire Shows held in recent years . It is important that every Berkshire breeder who wishes to keep abreast of the times , should fit some of his choicest specimens for this great Show . If he cannot fit an entire herd filling all the classes , let him show one or mere head anyway . It is well known that there is no state in the Union that compar...

About Ralph Creighton's Herd . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 June 1910
About Ralph Creightons Herd . Creighton , Mo . To The Berkshire World , Springfield , 111 . Gentlemen : —In answer to your letter asking me to give you something for publication concerning my Berkshires , I want to say , in the beginning , that my first consideration in breeding has always been to select animals of superior individual merit . That it the prime factor in the show ring , lot , and the main requisite in the open market to secure market toppers . Then why should it not be in the Breeder s herd ? Of course , in taking such a position as this it is not necessary for us to neglect good blood , recognizing the fact that it is hazardous to breed from freaks or accidents , that is animals that have just accidently happened good , and have a poor line of ancestry . The main thought that I wish to convey , is , that a good pedigree with a good individual , is good , but a good pedigree without a good individual to back it up , should not be considered by a breeder . I started i...
