i ft1 fm g - ri I IM i n 1 1 r Bv - 3fL V a - vi s 2 BLOODY RIOT Deputy Sheriffs Attaek a Body of Marching Miners at Latimer From Fifteen ta Twenty Killed and Fifty or More Wounded After the First Volley the Infuriated Miners Scattered In All Directions Gov Hast ings Has Ordered Several Companies of State Troops to the Scene Hazleton Pa Sept 11 The strike situation reached a terrible crisis on the outskirts of Latimer Friday after noon when a band of deputy sheriffs fired into an infuriated mob of miners The men fell like so many sheep and the excitement since has been so in- tense that no accurate figures of the dead and wounded can be obtained Reports run from 15 to 20 odd killed and 40 or more wounded One man who reached the scene Friday night counted 13 corpses Four other bodies lie in the mountains between Latimer and Harleigh Those who were not injured carried their dead and wound ed friends into the woods and estimate is baffled The strikers left Hazleton at 330 oclock Friday...

PV V j - fc r X fv 1 THE FARMING WORLD AiLi THE VINE HOPPER Hw Tliis Destructive Pest Is Fooelit In California Bulletin No 116 of the California sta tion Berkeley describes the Califor nia Vine Hopper -which is counted as one of the four things doing the great est injury to the vineyards of Califor nia The bulletin gives an interesting account of the life history of this in jurious insect and goes on to suggest remedies some of which may toe of in terest to our readers It is stated that some growers believe that the hopper may be kept in subjection by sheep dng the vineyard Sheep are turned into the vineyards after the fruit is picked and permitted to eat down the DEVICE FOR JABBING INSECTS leaves This method is considered in effective as are also the methods of burying- the leaves and spraying in win iter Summer spraying is said to be an effectual process but is costly and diffi cult The insect is very active and dn order to kill it a very strong and pen etrating wash like kerosene...
