It is said that at one time, wben Lo rtnzo Dow preached urder a large spruce , jiine in South Catolina, he an nounced another appointment for preaching in the same place, on that daj twelve month. The year passed, and as Loreazo was enUring the neighbor dcod, the evening proceeding his appointment, he overtook a colored boy who was blowing a long tin ham, and could send out a blast with rise, and swell, and cadence, which waked the echoes of the distant hills. The Suez Canal. t ! i The coinplotion of the great work o! connecting the MediterrHnean and the Red Seas, by means of a ship canal across the Isthmus of Suez, murkes an era in the history of the nations of Europe.- The commerce of the East wan the gra.it incentive to the building of the stupendous work, and of course England which had obtained hi most a monopoly of it, in consequence of her eastern possessions, exerted Lcr pow er ful influence in opposition to it, know ing full well that it threatened her pros perity, Rnd would imperil her power in the markets of the Orient. The com pletion of the canal will oblige her, in common with other nations, to use the facilities it affords, instead of depending upon the lengthy routes by way of the cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn.
